from what I last heard the top four car brands for safety were something like this:

1. Volvo / Saturn / Saab - Volvo and Saab have been in a tie for a while over the last 15 years, but Saturn joined them in the last 8 years or so.

2. Volkswagon / Audi / BMW / Benz / Skoda - they are all German built what can you expect ?

3. Toyota (Lexus division) since 2000 / Ford the complete company (only in the last 8 years because of Volvo techies) / Subaru - 3rd place has a lot of line up's in it because of all what ford is into such as Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda etc......... Toyota's safety is slowly making it's way down into lesser models.

4. Honda / Nissan / General motors - GM is slowly creeping up and so is chrysler.

Sorry, Volvo has had exactly nil to do with Ford safety ratings (ie. Windstar, Taurus, two of the highest ever rated) until very recently.
I was reffering to the euro part of the company..... ie. like the MK2 focus.
It's also why I mentioned Skoda.
the best safety rated car in my humble opinion is gotta be the ford focus that has a front re-bar that has not been cut up, has a rear re-bar instead of a a cushon of foam, has aftermarket breaks, cus factory ford breaks are s**t, minimum 17" rims with tires that actually stick to the road instead of sliding all over the place,etc... lol
Ford 500 maybe??

Has 5 star front and side impact ratings and that is not including side airbags.
