The gist of it is quite simple. Either you travel an inordinate distance to work, or you don't.

I'm curious about this in light of our recent gas discussion and the fact that gas has become stupidly expensive in the last few months. More expensive than before, anyways, which wasn't all that great to begin with.

Actually, if you work a conventional 5 day-per-week, 4-weeks-per-month work schedule, you can multiply your distance times 40 if you travel the same ways constantly to and from work. That's your monthly distance travelled. Multiply your known fuel economy per 100KMs for your scenario by your kilometerage (divided by 100). That's your fuel consumption per month. Multiply that by the going rate you pay for gas (either 87, 91 or 93+ depending on your car).
There's your cost for driving to work (in gas costs only).

Mine: 4kms, each way, all city driving. So 4kms x 2 times daily = 8kms. Times 5 days a week = 40kms. Times 4 weeks a month = 160kms.

I average 120Kms per 1/4 tank in town (indicated, not counting the reserve). That's 120kms per 10L, or 8.333L/100Kms. 8.333 times 1.6 (for 160kms) = 13.33L of gas. 13.33L of gas times 1.132/L = $15.08 of gas for the month.

Discuss.
46.2km WINNER IS STEVE!

one way? or round trip?

One way it's 32 kms even, 64 kms round trip, my sister and brother work at the same location on different schedules. so it's 64 kms each trip for me to take them to work, which is my work. only break I get from diving either of them is when they finish work, I take the company van to take my brother home, and sometimes my brother-in-law picks up my sister with his jeep, the rest of the time it's my car.

so, 64 + 64 + 32 = 160 kms per day.
so, 160 x 5 = 800 kms per week. not including any driving round town.

so yeah you guy can do the math for the rest. So what do I win ?
one way!!!

oooh yeah1
I used to drive 110 kms one way to work but then I'm moved from the country to the city and now it is only like 15 one way! Lovin' the choice to move now!

110+110*5 = 1100km/week (not including weekend driving)
I put 72,000kms on my last car in a year.

Still got you beat then..... HA HA!!

46.2 x 2 = 92.4 kms.

92.4 - 160 = 67.6 kms. still got you beat lol.
I think it about 4...but i voted 5 just to be safe...

then again Saskatoon is only 10 square kilomteres anyways
hahaha, its the distance YOU drive to work, not drive others. :P
I go 58km one way......

I'm now applying for jobs closer to home

You got me beat, 47km each way.
damn...lol focus drivers = teh stupid....

lol whats your record travel time

(First snowfall last year)

5h16m lol .... Erinmills Pkwy(mississauga) Victoria Park401(North York)

it takes me about 10 minutes to walk right now... after the end of next week, I'll have two possible routes to work.

1) the hallway leading to my 2nd bedroom (aka office)
2) the hallway leading to the living room (aka the conference room).

traffic's gonna be a bitch.
 damn you..... i wish i could work from home, but well we cant get our systems to work properly in the office, god forbid they build a remote acciess system

???? Is the math off here???? Don't you mean 660kms or possibly 1320?
lol....

220x5=1100

must be that north bay schooling :P
25km one way on the dot, all highway takes about 20 minutes. at 48 MPG(ok more like 44-45MPG  )

so 25 x 2= 50 per day
5 x 50 = 250 per week
250 x 4 = 1000km per month

so 7L per 100km

7 x 10 = 70L a month in gas

70L at 1 dollar = $70

reality, probably a bit more per month, sounds about right

70L at $2.40 = $168 per month in gas, thats insane compared to a dollar/L
um...dont' know my distances..but...2.5 minute drive, or a 7 minute walk.
Ya i'm like 65k one way to work. Sux driving from Hamilton to Nanticoke, the only saving grace is that the weeks that I travel which are numerous the car sits at work all week, saving me gas. But I think 65k puts me somewhere near the top of k's driven per day so far.
