Definitely the VOLANT, i've had/used a few and the VOLANT hands down had the best performance gains across the curve.

Cause if it is still hot as hell outside the volant is still gonna get bogged down just like any other short ram.

my 2 cents-first tried the aem cai as it was the first one out for the svt-a real p.o.s-sucked oil thriugh the mass air and tp causing me to miss one race. when steeda came out with theirs i got it-zero problems but cannot give you anything other than seat of the pants results-we still pull near 128 mph on virs long straights. very very happy. and btw, even when we used a catch can with the aem, we ran into other problems related to it.

from my experience, the longer the pipe, the more it suck at throttle response. maybe its just me, but I like to just stick a BIG cone filter on the maf with as little piping to the TB.

I had both long arm/cai and I swtiched back to the steeda hi flow. Meh no difference. on any hot day your car is going to bog down. get some pulleys and still goign to bog down. get a tb and its gunna bog down even more... with all the time and money wasted em and jarrod put into intakes putting a ractive/k&n/no name filter onto the stock plastic tube works the exact same...

i think so I now have a nice sized K&N filter on my stock tube and I think it works as good as when i had my short ram and my CAI i only noticed after like 4500 ...but throttle response is way beter with a short ram

Now this is where it is really simple to figure stuff out.
Your intake still remains IN the engine bay. Therefore it draws in air from the EXACT same SOURCE as my intake. So how could it be that much better? The air is hot no matter what under there. Your cone and my cone are gonna sit RIGHT IN THE SAME SPOT. How can yours be THAT much better? It makes no sense. That plastic box around yours doesn't = colder air man.

Yeah well I had a short ram before, the thing bogged down like s**t when it was hot outside plus when the vehicle reached normal operating temperature. With the VOLANT, no bogging down, no problem after the engine is hot plus there is way more highend with the VOLANT.
Compared to a AEM CAI yeah there would be pretty slight differences if at all, the AEM I would assume would be slightly better cause of the filter being lower drawing in colder air. Although with the AEM you gotta watch the puddles. Adding a bypass will lower the HP by about 0.4 (dynoed by AEM techs). The weather shield also works. Either way, they are both great intakes.
Sorry but when it comes to a short ram vs. a CAI or a VOLANT, ICEMAN there are big differences. It's nothing that is going to rip your pants off but there are big differences IMO. Another thing, the VOLANT draws in air directly from your stock snorkle which goes right into the VOLANT box. Also the intake to the VOLANT is on the side of the engine bay, further away from the head sources. Also the VOLANT seals to the inside of the hood with a thick rubber seal (similar to the ones on the doors) so your getting colder air into the filter, alot cooler then a short ram drawing in air from right beside the engine.
On a side note, do you own a VOLANT, have you driven a focus with one? Also to add, that might explain the voting above... ;)

anyone heard anything about the Focus Central intake with the matching ram air hood, i was looking at this a while ago, but went to china, moved, and now short on cash...
but with all this in the engine bay, cold air and this, would this not make a noticable difference if you had a ram air directly to the intake?

VOLANT is coming out with a scoop that draws in air from the grill area and feeds into the top of the air box completely sealing the top of the airbox to cooler air.

Either way, my volant filter stayed very cool after driving.
The best intakes are the ones that you can force the most amount of air into in enclosed area.... And have the least amount of travel for that air to go when you hit on the gas.
Just my 2 cents.

The cai with the focus rs front was a swet setup...that flter got hit with so much air....
i doubt going from a short ram to a cai is going to make your car any faster.
if all else fails I could eaily put a filter onto stock tube and make my own box to cover the filter.

K&N on stock tube is what I have. It's makes the nice intake noise! Performance doesn't do a damn thing. The only mods that make a differnce on our cars is either a supercharger or turbo. Everything else is because you grew bored and decided to do something else to your car!

Dan: What does distance of air travel have to do with anything? The cone is always surrounded by air... the difference is gonna be either cold or hot air... Remeber, ram air is a myth...
