Full Version: which turbo?

2000 zetec, 5 spd.

my plan for 1~2years is to keep 200~250whp without internal upgrade.
but later on, i would like to have 350 range max.

and want to keep catalyc converter in place, might be better idea to have high flow cat instead.

when doing turbo, do i eliminate egr?
how do i do emission test without it?
EGR is eliminated I believe.

As for emissions, move to Muskoka or north. Smile

If you're buying a kit - could you do any better than FSWerks? Being in CA surely they have the emissions thing figured out.

If you're doing it DIY - good luck, 'fraid I won't be much help.
Well, with your power goals in mind, i personally would recommend a FSwerks kit, mainly due to price point. You can run the GT2871R turbo and hit 350whp with that in conjunction with internal mods, IM and a nice 3" Turbo back. only draw back is going to be the catalytic converter for power levels.

Trust me when i say this, but anything over 300whp is near useless in a FWD vehicle, duratec with stage 2 is pretty fun ill say that, but without LSD it can be pretty useless at 8psi and up. Unless you are running some nice tires, LSD and boost by gear it can get pretty ridiculous. with that said, my goal is for 400whp on the dyno, but never more then 350 on the street and be running 245 series tires and boost by gear.

The top speed kits are very nicely made tho for sure, me personally couldn't justify the extra money if i wasnt going for north of 400whp or planned on having a race car.

good luck on your choice, however for budget fun, FSwerks zetec kit would be the perfect fit with the upgraded turbo.
I have the same plan in mind!! Although mine will be the 2.3 l duratec fswerks kit... Stage 1 hopefully by Christmas, stage 2 next summer... Keep us updated!!!
i suggest stage 2 from the get go, not much difference in price and its worth it to do it all at once.

topspeed has complete kit comes with tuning.

fswerks zetec turbo kit is not ready for sale and like the stock looking but haven't seen set price yet.

i will be doing clutch and torsen differential before turbo.

so...GFXjamie, what do u do when it comes to do emission test? put back to stock?
fswerks kit is on presale at the moment, call them for details.

for emissions, running a HFC should be fine, i know john passed emissions with his header and a hfc and a tune which shut the duratec egr off. i plan to grab a cat at that point, throw it on and hope for the best, worst case i get a hot test done....

gotta remember, turbo car run cleaner then n/a cars and will more then likely be easier for etest with proper equip. in place
Kona, I think you can upgrade the turbo to a bigger one in the FSwerks kit before you order it - call them to confirm. Keeping in mind the kit isn't even out yet... I'd start calling topspeed first.

TBH, I'll probably got with a topspeed kit eventually.
you can option the 28r, 28rs or 2871. 28r comes standard the others are a 200$ upgrade IIRC.

dont bother with top speed man, i will say they make a wiked set up. but how wild do you want? do you want all top end and no low end jam? if you want a RPM range with JAM the whole way through, FSW for sure. i know you live in tdot so i cant see you even being able to really hit much boost unless your on the 427 or other area highways, and even that is questionable LOL
i've actually moved to Ottawa Tongue
and when I was in toronto, I was actually out past the east end in oshawa, so only near the 401 Tongue

also for wild I'm only planning on 3-400fwhp.
not really into lower end power(..say road racing?) that will spool up quick before it touches 3000 rpm..
i was thinking more like 3500~4000 rpm range for boost.

i actually in etobicoke area and i mostly on 427 and 401 5 days a week.

i asked lotta questions for fswerks's turbo kit, their air intake location is questionable and they havent show fix for it yet..

right now with the 28r, i got full boost at 3000rpm, with a upgraded IM, bigger turbo like a 2871r will give you about 3400 rpm. topspeed set up is a more high winded set up, meant basically to rev out and make power far past where any ford motor can take even when built with the run of the mill eagle rods and je pistons
hmm..when next mm meet is on, let me ride in your pass seat.
i voted top speed those guys really no what there doing im on the phone with them about once a week talking to bryan...great guy to deal with
there is no doubt that topspeed makes a great product, however for your goals, it is overkill IMO. if you were after 400whp, i would hands down go top speed no questions asked as you can get large piping, bigger turbos etc... however the fswerks kit will still be capable of 350-400whp with the correct add ons and turbo selection.

anywho, fswerks site should have the kit on it soon as i checked their forum and they are finishing up product pics.
yeah i was over thinking..
i ll keep it simple and go for fswerks.
