Finally my heat shield under the car has let go, it is the one just under the passenger seats.

I remember reading that it was OK to just remove it, anybody do this without adverse effects? Or should I simply try and bolt it back up with some pieces of metal or large washers?

I tried to re attach it with big washers and it just fell off again. Just rip it off i have have had nothing bad happen after it has been removed.

i took all mine off. if your overlly concearned you can spray some bed liner under there

I think mine have been gone for years. I had them repaired a few times under warranty but with no luck.
