Are establishments like this required to use safety glass now?

nope, i don't believe so.. i have a buddy who is owns a glass company and when they change it, i think it's plate glass 3mm thick

As a Civil Engineering student i believe that is possible because windows like that arent usually required by code to be safety or tempered glass...in other word that sucks

well, that glass was safety glass considering how it shattered.
I just would have expected it to be plate glass instead -- which would have ripped her to shreds as she went through...

makes sense that it was tempered, it might have even been thick enough to withstand folks bumping it. However, I suspet the tray or glasses might hit the glass too. Causing it to shatter.
