Richmond Hill, Ontario - The Honda Civic kept its top spot for Canadian passenger car sales in June, while the Ford F-Series pickup did the same for light truck sales, says industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers. "Both of these vehicles are stretching their lead over their second-place rivals," DesRosiers says. "But also understand that any vehicle in the top ten is considered a big winner."
DesRosiers notes that the light-truck list is still dominated by GM, Ford and DaimlerChrysler, but they "are also growing their list of vehicles on the passenger side of the top ten list." The Saturn Ion makes the list for the first time, along with the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac Pursuit and Ford Focus.
DesRosiers also notes that "there is a continuation of the trend to entry-level vehicles, with these products up 15.3 per cent for the month, and 14.7 per cent year-to-date. And more commercial-use vehicles as well, with their sales up 12.4 per cent on the month, and 12.5 per cent on the year. The market continues to move away from the middle, with mid-sized family vehicles down 6.1 per cent on the month and 7.3 per cent year-to-date. Large/Luxury/Sport were up 4.2 per cent for the month, but remain down 2.3 per cent on the year."
Sales charts show that, over the last two years, subcompact unit sales have not been affected by the federal government's rebate on fuel-efficient vehicles; DesRosiers says that while the Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit had sales spikes, the segment overall is behaving as it usually does. "We said on day one that the 'feebate' would fail miserably; four months into the program we are being proven to be right," he says.
The top ten best-selling passenger vehicles in Canada in June were, in order, the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Yaris, Chevrolet Cobalt, Toyota Camry, Saturn Ion, Pontiac Pursuit/G5, Ford Focus, and Toyota Matrix. Year-to-date, the top ten are the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Yaris, Chevrolet Cobalt, Toyota Camry, Pontiac Pursuit/G5, Ford Focus, Toyota Matrix, and Nissan Versa.
The top ten best-selling light trucks in June were, in order, the Ford F-Series, Dodge Caravan, Ford Escape/Escape Hybrid, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado, Dodge Ram, Pontiac Montana SV6, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Uplander and Honda CR-V. Year-to-date, the top ten are the Ford F-Series, Dodge Caravan, GMC Sierra, Dodge Ram, Chevrolet Silverado, Ford Escape/Escape Hybrid, Ford Ranger, Pontiac Montana SV6, Chevrolet Uplander and Honda CR-V.
