Nissan Hits 100 Million Vehicle Mark
July 2006

Nissan, Japan's second-biggest automaker, says it has produced more 100 million vehicles since its establishment in 1933, The Associated Press reported.

As of the end of June, Nissan's lifetime total stood at 100,140,000, of which some 76,640,000 were built in Japan and about 23,500,000 overseas.

However, Nissan, the second Japanese automaker to reach the milestone after Toyota, has recently reduced production at two domestic assembly plants because of sluggish sales. Nissan said that its June domestic output fell 13.3 percent to 108,568 units in June, while overseas output decreased 8.6 percent to 168,867 vehicles.

Providing a little history, the story said that the Tokyo-based automaker started in 1933 as Jidosha-Seizo Co., or Automobile Manufacturing Co., after taking over the operations of small Datsun passenger cars from Tobata Casting Co. Jidosha-Seizo's first car was called a Dustan Type 12 and the company name was changed to Nissan Motor Co. in 1934.
