hey, i'm having a bit of a problem with my laptop. the screen just stopped working. was working on it for awhile today, left for a couple of hours, and went back on it when i got back the screen.

any idea on what it could be?
at the risk of being Mr. obvious...sounds like the screen is dying...my mom's laptop started flickering and buzzing, the screen would shake and then within 3 days it was toast,

good luck!
And considering laptop screens can cost as much as a new lappy itself, start looking for a new laptop and get ready to do a ghost.
unless you got a warranty,..if the screen is toast..get a new laptop

Apart from the obvious "if your screen is going you're screwed" observation, there are a few other possible things:

When you went away for a while, did you close the laptop?

Two issues I've had in the past is that some laptops have a little button that shuts off the screen when the case is closed. Usually it's up near a hinge on the inside -- sometimes that pin (or the switch inside) gets stuck, you may have to open up the case to pop it back out. The other issue is that the wires from the motherboard to the screen run through the hinge. Sometimes after a while the wires can break, especially if you open and shut your laptop a lot.

Just a few things to look for.
I left it open when i went out, it only gets closed when i take it somewhere with me.

I am taking it in to where i bought and thankfully i do have wanenty on it, hate taking it in to places cause i don't know it everything will be back on my computer when i get it back. mostly 5 GBs of music and 3 GBs of movies.
seen many latops do it. Sonys are known for it but other do it to. Its usually an overheating issues. My older laptop at home does the same thing. I have a fan blowing on the computer from the back and seems fine.

It should be covered under warranty if its a newer laptop
