You don't need as much weight training to shed the gut, but more cardio.

More cardio is a definite but as well healthy eating along with a cardio based weight program will yield you greater results! Going heavier will not get rid of the pot belly..... try moving a weight that you can get 12-15 reps out of 3-4 sets but only 45 - 60 secs rest in between each set! This will provide enough resistance to keep you pushing the same weight but as well increasing your heart rate as you procede throughout your workout.
You can mix it up by adding a couple days like this during the week and possibly going heavy on the other days to aid in the muscle building aspect of the routine.
Then again if you want another little challenge you can add tri-sets, supersets, drop sets, or run-the-rack sets ......
There are a lot of different things you can do, but in the end with all of this diet plays a really important factor with the end results.
Cardio to the point where you're definitely wasted 3 nights a week, and then throw in an odd night of good, decent repetitions of weights for good measure. 1 night off, 1 night on.
The trick is to use up more energy than you've recently taken in and dip into your favourite reserve of go juice :D

You could do a hard 45 - 60 min of cardio then hit say Chest/Shoulders/Biceps/Triceps directly after and still be done in about 1 hr 30 min **if you do the 60 min of Cardio** In the 30 min of weights that you are doing by keeping the rest short between the sets you will be keeping your heart rate up, so you will continue to burn the calories!!! But yes the big thing is to make sure you are using more calories than you are taking in! Again back to the proper nutrition thingy!!!
Really your workout program/schedule will depend on what your realistic goals are, and how determine you are to reach them...... That being said, time to write me a new program! :)
For the last couples months i ve been on a maintainence phase becuase of work and other stuff, just cardio 2-3 times a week and weights 1-2 times a week. And havent been eating 100% healthy, crap here and there. Ive gone from 154 lbs to 168 which is a combo of muscle and fat, mostly fat tho.
Im going to a friedn lake for na few days next week. But after that im going back on the same plan i had started new years day 2005 when i lost 60 lbs. Im going for my personal trainging certificate in september and i want to somewhat look the part.
This time around im telling everyone exactly what im doing, and including them in my plan. So that way when i go to the bar or out for dinner, and people sass me about not drinking or for ordering a salad. they know, and im not taking that s*** anymore from them. Goal is 10% or less bodyfat by the end of the year.
My brother just moved here and hes set on getting back in shape so at least i have a work out partner now also. The next year is going to be set of strictly getting in shape and saving money to move away and travel. If i have to give up alot of things such as friends, girlfriend, cars, work...ill do it. Im starting to feel old and i gotta do somethign about it!!
Which certificate are you going for? I want to get mine as well! I used to work as a trainer back in 99 - 03 but then stopped it. I just help people along now, but have definitely thought about getting back into it. Not sure if I want to attempt the ACE certification or just get the CANFIT Pro one.....

Wasting the night wasn't what I meant... I'm no certified weight trainer, but I've put myself back into decent shape. Also, ask Oscar about the gains (losses) my wife made for the first 3 years alone. She started out at 5'2" 170 lbs or so (just before we got together) and after the first two years she broke 135 and sat at 130. What's important to note is that this was all done with a massive diet restructuring (not much junk at all, more chicken and other white meat, better snacks and a healthy amount of carbs for energy, and cut out up to 5 chocolate bars a day!) and no supplements.
She's done basically that... most nights cardio, some nights a cardio / weight training mix and maybe one night a week of pure weights. Over the years, we've constantly rotated her workout to reflect different needs. Once the majority of the weight she wanted to lose was gone, we shifted the focus to weight training to improve strength. Once her strength hit near-current levels, we scaled back and re-empahsized cardio.
She now jogs for over 30-40 minutes around our neighbourhood a few times a week, in addition to elliptical work and the odd rowing session or recumbent biking. We also bike a fair amount and she's still refining her rollerblading skills. :P
She's now below 120lbs (doesn't want me to say exactly how much as she feels the numbers aren't as important as the health gains... which is true!) and she's a size 1/3. She's quite strong and has a healthy amount of muscle mass. She's also quite adamant about keeping herself fit and building on her successes.
Again, I'm not a certified exercise anything nor would I profess to be, but I'm happy to help anyone out with good common sense diet tips and a well-rounded workout plan. :)

Not trying to sound flippant, but that's just what we've learned along the way. I mean, guys that are 5'2" are normally 125-130, easy.
I was down 32 pounds until this round of vacationitist I caught.
Now I am afraid of the scale.
Any of you looking for any sort of workout advice.... let me know...
I just graduated from the University of Ottawa with a degree in Kinesiology (Human Kinetics), and I have my PFLC certification... and I don't mind helping out getting people started on workout routines.
And just because I'm a girl, that doesn't mean that I don't know how to lift. :)
As for the working out and keeping up stuff, my best piece of advice is to get a pedometer.... no kidding, they help you to monitor just what you're doing during the day. As a server in the market downtown in Ottawa, I was walking over 11 miles per shift, add that to what I normally do during the day, I was getting quite into it, and feeling the benefits.
And being afraid of the scale... don't be. Sometimes it's your best friend in terms of keeping your weight in check.
Got on the scale today. After the copious amounts of beer and crap I ate...................
I lost 2 more pounds.

Yeah exactly, you may not be fat but your killing other 'internal' things that, when your older, you'll pay the price for..... I can't believe anyone would eat that s*** so often, if people had any idea how unhealthy that is. I'd sooner have a smoke, sadly although I'd never do that either.
(not directed towards Tyler but in general)......I've met Jay many times though, he's a small guy to begin with so don't let the 'weight' number fog the whole idea.
What really gets me is how little time it takes to actually 'stay in shape'..... people are lazy asses for the most part, considering it takes a 1/2 hour, 3 times a week, anyone has that time and people that say they don't are just making excuses.
It's very easy to stay in shape, stay healthy.....

I completely agree with you... sometimes, all it takes is parking a little further away and walking the extra distance.....
so my advice, put more money into your car so you have a reason to park at the end of the parking lot :)
There ya go, yeah I noticed with the Volvo I just got, I tend to park a LONG way away from the doors. It's all good though, I'm actually preparing for my firefighting testing (entrance requirements for school) coming up here in November so the more exercise I can get, the better.
First test is a 3:20 second (1 step per second) on a stairmaster type machine to simulate walking up stairs, but carrying 75 pounds of equipment. There are 8 separate tests, all have to be done within 10 minutes or so but starting off with something like that will get your heart pumping. It's basically equivalent to walking up 20 flights of stairs carrying 75 pounds, not extremely difficult but taxing on the system.
I've passed the police entrance exams several times in the past so not to worried but want to be prepared with this.
Back to the health thing though, it's really easy to do. Sure it takes dedication but honestly when you wake up, don't feel like s*** like most people do, don't have a coughing spell for 5 minutes (smokers) and feel rested, nice way to start the day everyday. I've dropped close to 60 pounds and 8 inches off my waist plus doubled, and tripled the weight I train with, all in the past year or so. I put in about a total of 3 hours weight training, 3 hours biking, cardio, etc and maybe an hour or so with typical pushups, situps a week. So about 7-8 hours a week (weeks have a total of 168 hours so this only takes 4% of my weekly time. Who doesn't have the time for that?

Yeah there is, do a GOOGLE FOR MESC in Brandon, Manitoba or Fire Etc in Vermillion, Alberta. There is a VERY VERY LONG waiting list, I've been on MESC's for almost a year and a half now.
Tuition and living expenses are around $25,000 for 8-9 months, there are two courses a year, around 20-30 people in each course. There is a physical and mental testing as well as a rank interview from what I've heard prior to even getting into the college.
Major competition to get in as there's probably a couple hundred applicants.
You have to have a bunch of things done before hand, all your CPR, first aid certification, driver's license with air brake endorsement and some other things, certain courses (biology) highly recommended.
The course in MESC, which I am going for, will certify you as a first response EMT and Fire Fighter with all the credentials to work basically anywhere in the world. International certification and MESC's program is the most advanced, complete course out there.
Depending on where you work, starting wages around 55-60k a year, some jobs in Alberta for example are called 'FireMedics' where you are both an EMT and a fire fighter and those can start upwards of 80k a year.
Regardless of pay, this is totally what I want to do. It's 'perfect' for me as I can utilize my size (6'4" or so and 260 pounds, not fat, muscle) and it's right in line with my goals in life. I've been 'somewhat' preparing myself for this for years. I tried with the police for 4 years, passing all their physical testing, mental testing each and every time (I think 8 times total) now and still didn't get in, stupid 'issues' I'm not getting into that had nothing to do with me.
Anyway yeah, amazing career. There are 'shorter' courses out there that a person can take but your salary and where you want to work is very limited by this. The 'shorter' more basic courses are over in Alberta.
I'm hoping to get hired on in Saskatoon actually, the housing costs and overall cost of living here is 'perfect' plus Saskatoon and MESC are hand in hand as Saskatoon only hired MESC grads and heavily pushes for 'local' people, people born and raised in the city.
They hire about 15 people a year but tons of retires coming up in the next 5 years. I have an 'in' into the MD Ambulance here in the city so I can, after graduation, hopefully get hired on with them until a position opens with SFD.....
Last year at this time I was in way better shape... working out etc... now this year I don' t think I've touched the equipment more than to move it out of my way when getting to a shelf..... no time to workout.... working and working on the race car.... when i get a spare second i just want to sleep..... If I worked out a bit i might happen to have more energy... so... my muscle tone etc has weakened... however i haven't gained more than 5 pounds.... i still hover at 170-175lbs.... probably because i just don't stop... from 5:30am-1am usually daily sometimes even 2am or 3:30 last night.... If i could slow down i might be able to get some sort of plan on the go....
