The Focus has been named the ZX3(2 door hatch), ZX4(sedan), ZX5(4 door hatch). Now if we go back, the Focus replaced the ZX2 Escourt. Go back one more what was the ZX1 if there is such a thing, what could be deemed the original Sport Compact for Ford.

ZX1? sounds like a mustang package form the 80's or early 90's to me.

The Evolution Of The Focus - guilty - 10-20-2005

That would be a car with.. 1 door? I dont think Ford ever built a 1 door coupe or hatchback :P

They starting calling the Escort by "ZX2", then totally ditched the Escort title and called the coupe the ZX2. I guess they figured it would be clever to carry that on with the Focus ZX3 (it might also imply to people that the ZX3 is 1 better than the ZX2). Also remember that this is totally a North American naming system, the European models dont have any Z-badges at all.
