Turbo Progress! Oscar Look Here - GFXjamie - 04-02-2010

Turbo has arrived. looks to me that this turbo is actually the GT28RS?? it has a 3 bolt flange for intake side and i thought gt28R only had a 2 bolt. anyways, kit is complete, came with injector harnesses from CFM, waterline kit, and stainless oil drain/feed kit YAY no maintenance! came with stage 2 install pics but thats it. also came with upgraded baileys motorsports diverter valve.

Picked up a new alternator today, got some oil, and a filter, got MBC and boost gauge. time to rock out with my cock out.

ill have pics of how far i get tomorrow. ill have about 7 hours to work on it with some friends so hopefully get it all banged off easily.

Word up

Damn, wanted to give you a hand with install.

Did you do the compression test?

i know compression is still good. i dont burn any oil and car still runs 100% also. havent had any issues thus far performance wise.

also if you want, swing by my shop if your home and not at bruce.

Making progress....

Also, oscar, did you have trouble with turbo inlet piping?? im having one heck of a time without any instruction or pictures of what wires to move. pipe is in below wiring but doesnt look right. the pipe for DV and vac line for it are like touching the plugs for o2 sensors on back side of block

also have no idea what wires to splice into for AIT sensor either. one more thing, where do i put PCV tube? or do i just put a filter on it? randy really needs to hurry up with his instructions!! O btw, all piping is mounted minus turbo inlet needs to be clamped on. still doesnt seem right tho...

Turbo Progress! Oscar Look Here - Oscar The Grouch - 04-03-2010

The inlet pipe is a PITA to put in. Let me grab my camera and I'll see if I can give you some info on some of the items you're having trouble with.

Turbo Progress! Oscar Look Here - Oscar The Grouch - 04-03-2010

Ok first thing.

IAT sensor wires are white/black and white/purple.

Unfortunately I can't find my goddamn Canon Camera. I'll try to whip up my Gopro.

So the sensor wires... if you look at the plug (retention clip at the bottom and facing the wire socket, here's how I have mine crimped. Purple/white on right, white/black on left.

[Image: 26282_10150144629870247_833575246_117035...1838_n.jpg]

I'll try to get you pics of the other stuff.

Turbo Progress! Oscar Look Here - GFXjamie - 04-03-2010

so thats the colours on the maf harness i splice into? IAT has a harness comming off it, so just splice into that set? how did you do it, solder or scotch connectors?

i got the inlet pipe on, but it doesnt line up to where it is suppose to mount and there is no room for my DV line. Also, bracket off air filter tube down under bumper area doesnt line up to really any holes. besides that i have everything assembled. intercooler is attached with 2 bolts currently as a mock up to run all piping.

gotta re attach harnesses around inlet pipe once i get it 100% figured out. what a pita without a write up lol and fj doesnt have one!

Turbo Progress! Oscar Look Here - Oscar The Grouch - 04-03-2010

I might have a little vid to show you a few things.

Yes you splice into the MAF harness right near the plug that goes into the MAF sensor.

Turbo Progress! Oscar Look Here - GFXjamie - 04-03-2010

sounds good. just drop me an email with all the stuff you have, i will go over it many times at work tomorrow until i can get back at it. currently just finishing up for the night. i have about 7 hours into this thing, 3-4 of which i had a couple buddies helping out and trying different things to get it all to work.

hopefully ill have it all buttoned up tomorrow night and have my baseline tune on and datalogged.
i really hope randy comes through with stage 1 instructions and some good pics or something. soooo lost at what to do.

wish me luck! btw turbo looks so sexy! especially looking up from bottom.

also what size vac line goes from DV to inlet? i have an upgraded DV from previous owner but theres no vac line for top of it. i could use some off my boost controller i suppose or if i have extra from boost gauge.

thanks a bunch oscar.

Turbo Progress! Oscar Look Here - Oscar The Grouch - 04-03-2010

Here's the location for the PCV tube location. Its on the intake manifold.

Yes just splice into the colours I showed you. I crimped mine. Randy says he prefers crimps (I had originally soldered everything but had to go back and crimp).

The bracket off the air filter tube has one spot it can mount to but it is tight. It mounts to the frame and you'll have to either make it line up to the one hole I did or tap a new hole.

As for the DV, it is really tight in there but it fits. You'll have to move some wiring out of the way.

BTW what year is your car?

Turbo Progress! Oscar Look Here - GFXjamie - 04-04-2010

im a 2007 just like yours.

ill connect into the IAT tonite, did you have to move 2 of thr 3 o2 sensor harness'?

we only need one so i guess it makes sense to move the other two. which o2 plug did you use? i cant remember what one was on my header. if you remember from turbo over to battery box there are 3 on backside on a mounting plate

Turbo Progress! Oscar Look Here - Oscar The Grouch - 04-04-2010

You use the o2 sensor that is on the manifold. I believe it is the shortest one. I'll check in a bit as my car is currently on the jack.

Here's some photos I promised you.

Here is your answer for which o2 sensor to use.

Pic of the location to put the air filter tube to mount. There is a plastic fastener there originally, just remove it, tie it off. Retap the spot or drill it bigger and fasten with a washer. Mine is off right now as my bushing broke and I'm applying new resin to fix it.

[Image: 26282_10150144852655247_833575246_117094...9937_n.jpg]

Here is the setup at the oil filter. Yours will look a little different as I have an oil filter expansionary base for my oil sensor.

Here's how it looks at the drain plug side. Note the T-Fitting and plug on one end. Makes it easy for oil changes.

Hope this solves most of your questions.

Turbo Progress! Oscar Look Here - GFXjamie - 04-04-2010

sweet. ill be putting T fitting on drain side once i get to first oil change, not a big deal ATM. I will also be heat wrapping my downpipe aswell because of its proximity to the alternator. plastic shield would not go on with downpipe there.

o2 sensor should be easy. should i heat wrap it? i have some extra heat wrap tubing left over that i can use.

also, have you had any issues with boost leaks and these crappy clamps? i think im going to up grade all the charge piping clamps eventually becuase you can only get them so tight until they stop threading and skipping.

Im going to tackle inlet tonite with a buddy and see if we cant get it set. also kit didnt come with mount for intake so ill have to rig something up. i need a rubber isolator im assuming or will bolt n nut work with a sleeve between support and bracket?

randy is working on tune right now, had to give him a bit more info. should have it running tonite i hope as long as tune shows up, then i can check for leaks.

git r done. thanks for the pics. will be a great help. ive gotta a bit more wire tucking to do around that inlet pipe it seems. stuff is pretty tight to reconnect with that in there. ill run em all under neath hopefully

As for the alternator, I built a little heat shield for it. Just fashioned it outta some spare aluminium and painted it black. As for heat wrap, go for it. I'm thinking about respraying mine with a silicone based spray and heatwrap. Linky

Your o2 sensor should be wrapped. When I bought my kit, it came with some heat shrink tubing which I cut down the center and put around everything electrical. I'll be fixing it to look better later on but will be doing some info searching on what to use. As for the inlet bracket, you'll need it to be firm but yet flexible. I tried epoxying mine but it broke...so ty-raps for now until i get a new one.

Boost leaks... nope but I would suggest going with upgraded clamps if you can. It is something I've been wanting to ask Randy about for sizing and such.

Tip... for the small hoses, use tywraps to secure them to the boost lines. I've been using them like this and no problems in 2 years.

The hardest part of this whole installation is that one f***ing pipe that goes from the maf to the turbo... It is a pain but is manageable when you have the turbo in place. If I could have suggested anything, put the turbo and manifold on LAST so you can use the room to snake the tube in from the other side.

Can't wait to see the final pics and sounds.

Turbo Progress! Oscar Look Here - GFXjamie - 04-04-2010

the way i figure is that putting turbo in last would be a bad idea as all piping would be in the way and no room to work and get waterlines and oil lines plumbed.

just finished heat wrapping entire down pipe, now to tuck and pull more wiring to make a better fit. besides i think a few wires in the way, the inlet pipe will work. once thats done, IAT and maf will be done. boost controller is one, just gotta zip tie a bit.

also at top of DV there is a vac line spot. where does that go to? inlet pipe? because if so that looks to be where the line from back side of vavle cover goes. hmmm

more work to be done! gotta get at it. base tune is ready aswell, just gotta finish smashing knuckles and get wrenchin.

Turbo Progress! Oscar Look Here - Oscar The Grouch - 04-04-2010

I'm trying to find the info. f*** I wish it wasn't raining outside.

Turbo Progress! Oscar Look Here - GFXjamie - 04-04-2010

well i think its time to pack up for the night. all charge piping is done. had to remove some brackets n such to make it all work. diverter valve is giving me problems getting it onto turbo outlet side charge piping. ill have a clear head tomorrow to finish that. also missing the vaccum line from DV to intake manifold :( so gotta wait and pick that up tomorrow.

didnt get a lot done today in the almost 4 hours ive been at it. remove a bunch of junk, tucked away some wiring and finished that piece of crap pipe. mind you ive been on my own tonight. got heat wrap on DP so thats a bit of progress i guess :(

list of things to do:

DV needs to be finished
Boost gauge install
finish mounting intercooler 100%
slice into MAF for IAT
work with datalogging etc..
re install bumper

doesnt sound like much, and with enough buddies helping it isnt. if one person cant get something another can. being alone tonite sucked haha
