Now THAT is a steal!

Keep in mind the 2.3 can handle roughly 25 lbs of boost with a proper head gasket on a stock bottom end... Whoooosh Psssttt! :D

I test drove one before I bought my old Escort, and it came down to I needed a commuter for roughly 180 km a day. If my driving would have been local, I would have been rocking an '87 XR4Ti in silver with black leather. :(

BAT will become your friend. Order yourself a 'guibo' now, or upgrade to a one piece drive shaft ASAP! :)

Oh, and naz, 12's come along with a boost controller, a 3" down pipe & exhaust, and a FMIC. Stock turbo, block, head and manifolds, the 2.3 was capable of 300+ hp in a body shell lighter than a Fox Mustang.

Looks pretty rust-free under there

This harshes the buzz-cracked in two places.

Disassembled and cleaned the console. It will need painting and a couple of repairs but otherwise pretty decent.
Not in any rush but making a wish list....

Does she actually run? I assume you tried it.

New Toy Arriving Friday - 02ztsian - 04-29-2008

It runs-made it easier to load it onto the trailer for the ride home.
I was kind of hoping to sell off the engine and trans to offset the cost of a new motor so it looks like I am trolling the local Pick n Pull.

really?

good luck with the restoration, it should be a lot of fun when you are done.

relridge.. is this car carbuerated and really easy to tune for the higher boost? that is pretty awesome if basically turning up the boost with a cheapo manual boost controller gets you into the 12s reliably

There's a really good thread on [FJ] of a guy building one of these up into a track car.
Lot's of info / progress pics there.

So you're going to change out the motor for sure? Any particular reason why? Is it no-good? Shame if that's the case.

Honestly, I don't like the way it looks. Additionally, I have seen a couple of videos of the XR4 running and it sounds like a tractor. Besides, that Yamahammer engine is SOOOOO SEXY!!!!! And I like the uniqueness of it. Dare to be different, if you will.

It's actually an EFI car, no carbs on there! :) Uses the Ford EEC-IV engine computer, so it is tunable as well. It uses a vane air flow meter (similar to RX7's) to calculate airflow, and just dumps in the gas as needed (with proper plumbing, injectors, etc)! :D

The Yamahammer would be an interesting swap. Check out some Ranger boards, I think it has probably been done there somewhere. Something tells me you'll need a Lincoln LS V-6 bell housing and tranny...

Watch out though those Yammahammer motors had issues WRT to the seals between the heads & the blocks (dissimalar metals IIRC was the issue)

After spending part of the morning assessing what shape the underhood components are in, I am finding more and more wires and hoses disconnected, plugged or hacked. My best bet might be to pick up a donor Taurus SHO and swap everything over.
And from what I read I should be able to use a Vulcan V-6 bellhousing from a RWD truck or van (yes they made manual trans Aerostars).
The problem is finding a clutch to use.
And as far as the rust I see surface rust but no perforation rust. No rust on the body but a cracked windshield and the interior is dirty dirty dirty.

Todays Update:
Pulled the seats out, and also pulled the carpet and most of the sound deadener.

Ugh!

Lots of free stuff including over $1.00 in very dirty change!

More ugh!

After reading up more on the Yamahammer I am more convinced it's the motor I want in there, especially after reading this on a Ranger forum...

heres an interesting quote i found from a ford motorcraft shop tips newsletter while looking for additional info on the v6:
"Because the engine is not boosted, it runs cooler. It supplies a smooth flow of power right up to 7300 rpm. At this point, a rev limiter starts cutting out cylinders to hold the rpms steady at 7300. This technique for preventing over-revving is the result of Ford's Formula 1 racing experience. This rev limiter is not designed to protect the engine, but to protect accessory drive components. The engine itself has been tested at rpm's greater than 8500."
WOW!!! :twisted

New Toy Arriving Friday - reldridge - 05-12-2008

One of my old buddies who is in the SHO scene claims that the SHO can rev to 11k rpm... He's got a few mean machines in his garage (supercharged V8 SHO, all motor '89 SHO that runs 11s, etc...). He has about 6 or 7 SHO's currently. He runs SHO Nut Performace.

The motor is a great motor. Just be aware of the care and feeding required. Check out http://www.shotimes.com/php-bin/ for more info.

I know that I posted about this before, but...it's very cool, and very well done for someone that did it all during their spare time...

http://www.tempo-topaz-performance.com/topazsho/

This guy (Bryce) did it all himself too with his Topaz, and he used to be the owner/adminsitrator/webmaster of:

http://www.tempotopaz.com/

Now that site is run by a guy by the name of JimmyK, as well as my dad is one of the mods on it too. JimmyK and some of the other people on that site know a LOT about that engine, and all things Ford, especially models from the XR4Ti's generation...

Hope this helps...!

New Toy Arriving Friday - 02ztsian - 05-14-2008

Thanks for the links!
I have heard the Yamahammer V-6 a stout motor compared to the SHO V-8. And the reason it was redlined at (I believe) 7300 was to protect the accessory drive components. I'm thinking underdrive pulleys and 9000 rpm!!!!!
OK time to calm down. Through my conversations with car people at work has lead me to a co-worker with a Merkur Scorpio for sale, with (supposedly) mint condition black leather seats for a song-just get it off her driveway. I gotta find a place to park this one as my wife won't go for both sides of the garage occupied!

New Toy Arriving Friday - Drivesthebeast - 05-14-2008

I have been told that while that engine was being R&D'd, they torture tested it, and the testing involved running some prototype and early production engines on engine dyno's, non-stop for a week straight at like 10,000-12,000rpm. Apparently, the Ford engineers said that the engine could have possibly run faster, but the accesories kept blowing up/caving in. Pretty impressive I think.

If you watch the video clips of the SHOpaz on the dyno, it sounds simply crazy when bryce hits the bottle...

Oh yeah, the SHO V6 generated more power, and the Taurus' with that engine were faster on the track than the V8 SHO's...why Ford would reverse engineer something to make it actually crappier... knows. If Ford had been more keen, they should have used the 3.9L V8 from the Lincoln LS...Cosworth/Ford Designed and built block and cylinder heads, Cossie/Ford internal parts, lightweight, 280hp, and 286 ft lbs of torque (and I think that was off of regular or 89 octane fuel too)...that's almost 4.6L mustang power...Also impressive.

New Toy Arriving Friday - 02ztsian - 05-14-2008

Just viewed a few videos but that motor sounds awesome!!!

New Toy Arriving Friday - paulicat - 05-15-2008

Another rumour about the sho v6 and its high revving abilities was basically at about the 10k mark, your valves will just float, so you'd need to really beef up the valve springs to get them to operate at crazy high rpms.
I miss my 89 SHO...
