Ignition Problem - habmann - 09-11-2005 Sorry to have to tell you this but if you can't turn the key at all you're gonna have to drill out the lock cylinder. Someone else on here might know how to do that, but if not I just had mine done about a month ago, and Ford charged me something like $400 to do it. Ignition Problem - Flofocus - 09-12-2005 VERY Common problem on the focus. Mine just went out on me last month. $383.00 for it. BerinG (a member on here) has done it himself. The part itself is about $125.00 from ford, you have to adjust the tumblers yourself, but the thing comes with instructions on how to do it yourself. He said it was failry easy to do, I would have tried it myself but got scraed when I heard you have to drill the old ignition cylinder out. Call Ford Canada and put in a complaint, I just wrote to the Sun's wheels section about this problem. Hopefully with enuff pressure they'll issue a recall so some family on thier camping trip doesnt get fawked in the grand canyon. About 200 and some members on focaljet.com have experienced this problem on the focus. Im going to move this to the Focus Talk section. we do not have any How to's for this one.....though it woul dbe nice to have for future members! Ignition Problem - Steph33 - 10-11-2005 :D I dit it myself ! It was time consuming cause i tried several stuff before using the drill. take off the plastic cover for the work.. U must drill if the steering wheel is locked, like mine. Step1: Use a big bit in order to unlock your steering wheel by drilling a large hole into the key compartment until by using a screw driver U can turn the ignition key lock and unlocked the wheel. Step2: I bought at ''AutoParts +'' a 70$ (taxes included) ignition key lock. Step3: On your Ford key, there is a small compartment where the electronic ship is. Carefully remove it. Step4: On your new key, the ship is inside too, but no way to access, so drill a 5 mm hole all the way in (you have to destroy the ship). Step5: Place the ship from the Ford key inside the hole U made in step4, close the hole. Step6: replace the ignition key lock in your car. Put your new key in, turn on and GO... BON VOYAGE! Total Cost: 70$ + time Ford Cost: up to 300$ + taxes. Make your choice ! ;) Use the difference for the gas... Steph33 :beerchug: Ignition Problem - CanadaSVT - 09-15-2006 TSB 05-21-17 IGNITION KEY DIFFICULT OR UNABLE TO BE TURNED OR REMOVED - KEY-IN-IGNITION WARNING CHIME SOUNDING WITH KEY REMOVED Publication Date: October 17, 2005 FORD: 2000-2005 Focus This article supersedes TSB 05-19-11 to update the Service Procedure. ISSUE: Some 2000-2005 Focus vehicles may exhibit ignition key related issues including difficulty or an inability to turn the key, an inability to remove the key, or (2005 only) the key-in-ignition warning chime continuing to sound even when the key is removed. ACTION: Based on the vehicle's symptom, refer to the appropriate Service Procedure. SERVICE PROCEDURE UNABLE TO REMOVE IGNITION KEY Check if the inability to remove the key is the result of normal operation of the key removal inhibit circuit: In automatic transmission equipped vehicles, the key removal inhibit solenoid (within the ignition switch assembly) is energized when the gear selector is moved out of the park position, and prevents the ignition key from being removed. If the gear selector is in any position other than park when the key is rotated or turned off, the key removal inhibit circuit will not release the key (key cannot be removed). To remove the key, the gear selector must first be placed in the park position, then the ignition must be cycled to run and back to lock. This is normal, do not replace the ignition lock cylinder if it is operating as described. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 307-05 and follow diagnostics for the "shift interlock system". The shift interlock system includes the key removal inhibit circuit, which may be causing the concern. If the shift interlock system is operating correctly, replace the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 501-14, "Ignition Lock Cylinder - Functional" removal and installation procedure. DIFFICULT OR UNABLE TO TURN IGNITION KEY Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 211-05 and follow diagnostics. If Workshop Manual diagnostics determine that the ignition lock cylinder is the cause, replace the cylinder. If the ignition key cannot be turned, follow the "Ignition Lock Cylinder - Non Functional" removal and installation procedure in the 2005 model year Workshop Manual Section 501-14. KEY-IN-IGNITION WARNING CHIME SOUNDING WITH IGNITION KEY REMOVED (2005 Model Year Only) 2005 Model Year Vehicles Produced Prior to 7/1/2004 Replace the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to Workshop Manual Section 501-14, "Ignition Lock Cylinder - Functional" removal and installation procedure. 2005 Model Year Vehicles Produced 7/1/2004 or Later Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 413-09 and follow diagnostics for key-in ignition warning chime does not operate properly. Ignition Problem - Mike - 09-17-2006 My friend had the simlar problem with his car, couldnt turn the key, he said his way around this was simply to put a flathead screwdriver and turn it in the ignition....as far as me recommending that you do this ? I cant. However it might be worth a shot, it worked for him afterall. FWIW I read on an internal Ford website that this problem seems to be associated with people who have heavy keychains and stuff hanging off the key while it's in the ignition. I'm not sure if that's been proven out or disproven, so take it with a grain of salt. FWIW I read on an internal Ford website that this problem seems to be associated with people who have heavy keychains and stuff hanging off the key while it's in the ignition. I remember reading this on another site back when my ignition cylinder went bad. Thats why I only have the car key on the key chain when its in the ignition now. May or may not be an issue of having too many keys orginally, but i'm not gonna take a chance. Ignition Problem - euro_zx5 - 09-17-2006 Well seeing as this thread has been resurrected, i'll add my two cents. I have and always will have a crapload of keys on my key chain  my dad's always had a similar set in the ignition of our Ranger, Escort, and even the odd drive in my car... with no problems. I believe the only issue here is the steering wheel lock that prevents the key from turning; when the wheel is turned and holds the cylinder tight, it prevents it from turning easily. Easy fix, and it still happens in our 96 Escort and my 05 Focus, turn the wheel side to side slightly when turning the key, and it'll fix the 'problem' every time. All automatics in our case (so far :P) but it should be the same idea with any manual trans too. |
