Now I know why Ford is in trouble. GM introduces a Solstice Targe coupe, a new Pontiac, the G8, a G8 "ute". Hyundai introduces a V-8 coupe. Ford?
A new taxicab, a crash tested Taurus, a bunch of art deco Flex roofs and a couple of mustang versions. ( again )

and then, when you consider that the Edge outsold all the GM crossovers combined, maybe they don't need to dilute the brand anymore.
The solstice is nice, but waaaaay too niche (old men who missed out on the thunderbird re-intro), the G8 is the second attempt at the (holden) GTO, and the utes are a desperate attempt to gain any foothold in the market.
Ford will have to start worrying once the camaro hits, as it'll eat into the mustang sales.. but I think they have some decent products right now... in fact, Ford has the most vehicles I'd consider to buy -- before it was only one (the focus, then the new stang)... but now I find myself drawn to the Edge, the new 500-Taurus, the stang, with the only "maybe" the new focus.
Which is a much different story than when I bought my focus -- car designs back in 2002 really sucked if you weren't rich...

I gaurantee GM is gonna make the same mistake with the Camaro as they did in previous years......... its gonna be way overpriced. Like honestly, grab a new Mustang GT for $35,xxx in change, its got 300hp. Drop maybe 2.5k-5k in the motor (if you wanted to) and you have a monster. Now when the Camaro comes stock with 400hp what do you think the base price on that sucker is gonna be? Mid to high 40's? I wouldn't pay that....... it looks sweet... but 40gs?

For the Camaro to have any chance of sustained success against the 'Stang it has to be bulletproof. No typical GM "first year" issues because the 'Stang is solid and sorted out for the most part.
Unless they completely botch the upcoming Mustang reskin, coming in 09 I think, I doubt Ford has much to worry over.

Lutz said GM has dropped plans to offer a low-priced, entry-level Camaro with one of GM's low-tech V-6s. GM will position both the V-6 and V-8 versions of the Camaro as premium cars compared to the Camaro's chief rival, the Ford Mustang.
Lutz would not talk specifically about the Camaro's pricing. The car is scheduled to go on sale next February as a 2009 model, but Lutz did say GM views the Camaro as better equipped than the Mustang, and the price will be higher.
The Mustang V-6 coupe has a base price of $20,235. The V-8 GT coupe begins at $26,825. Both prices include shipping.
" We are going to be above Mustang," Lutz said. " We have a very sophisticated suspension system and, frankly, a much nicer interior. We are not going to try and match the Mustang on price. We are going to be premium-priced compared to the Mustang."

Well the new Dodge Challenger should outsell the Camaro, and for it's first year which will be a limited production unit with no options, I wouldn't doubt it sells quicker than the Camaro... and continues demand/orders into the next model year (which will have customizable options).
If the Camaro is 'premium priced' then doesn't that classify itself out of the competitors ranges? Thus bringing it into a different class of vehicle? It's no exotic, so why make it so special as to price it like one? Why not bring it out with a typical GM powerplant and make it a competitive priced model, then offer the 400hp beast as a special edition or GT (I mean SS) model?

it seems like the v6 camaro will have 300hp so if they priced it say... 24k it would be more expensive than the v6 stang (so it would be 'premium' compared to the v6 stang) but it would have as much hp as the v8 stang.. so from a hp / price standpoint the v6 camaro would be a better deal..
and if the 425hp v8 camaro is say.. 34k it would be a 'premium compared to the v8 stang but it would also have 125 hp more..
i think the camaro pricing strategy might actually work?

doubtful IMHO. the camaro looks to have mostly street and drag strip use in mind (nicer interior, back seat, prob heavier) while the vette is more of a racing (road course, drag strip) toy
if you wanna go racing with an american car the vette (more specifically the z06) is still probably where you wanna go.. if you wanna cruise with a cool looking cheaper car with your buddies and maybe do some burnouts then you'd go with either the stang or the camaro
