Sadly, it's because the dipstick is on the same side as the intake mani, and that's oriented to the rear of the engine bay. It never made sense to me, either. Then again, at 6'3" reaching the dipstick never posed that much of a problem. Note that the dipstick position is still the same with the Duratecs (4-cyls) and now easier to access at the front of the engine bay.
