My dog has one of those, I even think that is a little over the top.....

edit:
Thinking about this, its not even that secure. Unlike something such as a fingerprint these things are easily reproducable since they are man made.

Yah a couple of our dogs are microchipped. In some cases it works better than a tattoo, where some dogs are tattoo'd on the ear, and in some extreme cases of dog theft the ear was cut off with the tattoo and the owner could no longer have the dog truly identified by law. So our dogs that are microchipped are from the usa anyways. Our puppies we have, are tattoo'd on something less removeable. Such as the inner flank at the rear.
