I was referring to new and gently used machines, bud. :)
My buddy here in town is "pearwear" on the OSC - 06 STi:
deatschwerks injectors
Blouch 20G Turbo
Cobb Catted 3" Downpipe
Borla XR1 3" Catback
Grimspeed Up-pipe EWG kit for 38mm Tial
Walbro 255 Fuel Pump
(lol typing what I see on MSN right now in our convo). Once his tune is sorted out completely (just had to replace an O2 sensor) his car goes from "crazy" to "retarded". :P
I've even done some top-end motor work with him, that car is fairly easy to work on...moreso than I'd expect from a top-end sport compact car.
Yeah, Nate... starting with a WRX is a great idea if you wanna funnel cash into it. If you want something new, the WRX265 is the way to go.

Like I said, sti is not a fair comparision because of the 6 speed tranny. very easy to squeeze 'retarded' power out of it.

Guess we'll have to disagree. Im all about bang for your buck, buying a used 06 and dumping very little coin into it (im talking about less than $400) and youve got something better than the 265.

Sure, if you're into modding. The 2.5 in the WRX takes all the STi-geared toys and parts, as well as everything else for the WRX. The 04 and earlier WRXs have the 2.0L block and "top out" quite a bit lower than their 2.5L counterparts. Technically it's just as easy to mirror the parts and tune for a STi with the 2.5L WRX and have just as much power "from the get-go" but you're still suffering the 5-speed transmission, non-adjustable driveline and suspension, lower-grade brakes. If you want STi-fast, start with a STi.
For new, with a warranty and NO modding, the WRX265 is a steal. For 05-07 used, I'd still go STi. Way more gear, the 6-speed transmission, more power from the get-go. Kinda like the SPI/Zetec and 2.0L/2.3L Duratec turboing arguments. :)

its 05 and earlier that has the 2.0, bud.
Way more gear?
the 06 and 07's actually have the same brakes as the earlier sti's. Like I said, the only downfall is the 5 speed tranny when it comes ot the WRX. You still get the 2.5 with the 06 and 07's, ok, so you dont get an intercooler sprayer whooptdee...most guys remove it anyways onc ethey start modding, but I agree the 6 speed is nice. When Im looking to break the 350whp (~400 crank) mark, Ill be shopping for one, until then, my 06 tranny will get me there fine.
Once you get into modding with a WRX or STi, nothing can really be compared. You will be removing the turbo, intercooler, injectors, etc on both cars anyways.
I bought an 06 with 20k on it, warranty till 140k, I can get a custom tune for under $400 that will give me more power than a 265, and it will not be detectable by the dealership if I need warranty work done. buying used is the way to go.

All you need to know about Subarus:
NORTH
SOUTH
EAST
WEST
Lets all face the fact, the WRX is an awesome vehicle, I certainly don't treat mine like a trailer baby and you can go out and one one new or used TODAY. You've actually been able to do so for almost 10 years now.
No RS will "smash it" thats just silly ricer talk. Under ideal conditions one may be better than the other by 0%-10% I don't even know which one would be better but regardless neither will smash the other just like EVO's and STi's don't smash each other, or old school pony cars don't; they'll always be so close and the "winner" will get tossed back and forth year after year. It just doesn't matter. It's ALL good.
My WRX is completely stock I haven't a single performance mod. How much faster than 230 does one need to go? How often can you go for 200+ for hours on end? I had to drive to Montana to do that! It's more than enough car for anyone even me and I am a bit of a nutbar.

What's that $400 tune?
What kind of managment does it use? Cobb acessport? Utec? Open sourse?
Is this tune will be performed on stock car or with every supportive mod?
I payed $ 23.500 out of the door for this car.
Bought full turbo back exhaust, intake, coilovers, swaybars, endlinks,up pipe,Sti BBS forged rims, potenza re-01r tires, cobb access port
I'm up a little over $4500 and that's me finding killer deals on everything.
That's over $28000 and not including custom dyno tune yet
When I will get one and the car is going to be Protuned with stage 2 it will still be only be making Sti stockish power with crap 5 speed that doesn't like any abuse.
Sure I can put 16g or 18g turbo but than it's another chunk of $$$
For $28k I could have bought '06 Sti
I'm kinda mad about it
