I just put on a set of Hankook Ventus V12 K110's in 215/45/17. Car and Driver recently did a test and they finished 2nd place out of a lot of popular affordable tires. They have superior handling in wet conditions than most tires as well. I love them, they handle amazingly and I used them in wet conditions and didn't hydroplane once.

It cost me about 700 bucks for the set. Decent price.

What kind of tires are you looking for , all-seasons , summer ? For summer I would suggest the brands I have , Conti Sport Contact3 from Continental , or Dunlop Direzza Star Spec Z1 .

If your rims are 7" wide then 215 will easily fit ... but why just 40 ... why not the OE size of 215-45?

What Ken said.
Also a 205-45-17 will give you that smaller tire look but still have a bit of side wall so the ride isn't so bumpy.

There's so many brands and style's to choose from.
I'm thinking of getting a set of Falken 912's

My old tires were 205/40R17. The Dunlops are probably what I might go with as I had SP FM 901's before and they were awesome.

go with 45''s....so much nicer, if you really want grip you should really try RT615's, I never had a tire that griped so well when I had them on my focus.

definitly go with 215/45
Dunlop Direzza DZ101 is what I'm running right now. They have a good grip but a little bit noisy.

If you want really good tires try to fine these guys (they don't make them any more)
Bridgestone potenza RE-01R, they leave Falken RT615's behind.

But if you want really....really good tires then Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 would do the trick!

Direzza Z1 Star Spec are a notch higher , I heard they could become a little noisy too as they wear out , but if you have a loud sound system you won't notice it  . I use them on the track , with the windows open and helmet on they didn't seem noisy at all . :D

Road noise is not a big thing for me. I have other things that drown out the noise anyways.

falken azenis were awesome for me, for higher powered car they are great. also you could even increase your size even more to a 225 series tire. 225 40 would be a nice fit, even a 45 sidewall. would fill that bit of wheel gap nicely and give you awesome traction from a wider tire.

i vote azenis or RE11, both great tires

SES model is 205/50R16.

Nonetheless. I think I'm going with the Dunlops as I had great success with them before and they lasted 40k.

Thanks guys.

Those SES come with the Pirelli's no? How much better are dunlope's ? I hear the pirellis are kinda pricey to replace, if dunlop are a little sticker and cost less, than thats a better buy.

As of '05 I know the SES model came with the 16" P6 (P Suck) 3 and a 1/2 season tires cause that's what I had on the red rollerskate.

I would never willingly buy a Pirelli tire again after dealing with those things <_<
