Well, went to visit my father today, his eyes no longer look as yellow as mustard but he's still hella weak, both in his look and his movement.

They still have no idea what the hell is going on, they're doing an MRI on Monday (The second one IIRC) but what worries me is that right now his blood sugar level is really high (Were talkin' a measurement of 15 here, he's supposed to be around 5) so right now they've got him on insulin...

It's just so hard seeing him like this sigh

He lost that several years ago when it ruptured just hours before he was scheduled to be on a plane back from Switzerland to Toronto (If it had ruptured when they were over the ocean shudder)

My wife has had some "liver issues" but hasn't gone yellow, yet. Don't sit around pretending the Doctors know it all, be a pain in the butt to the Doctors. It could be a few different things with your Dad, but, I'm not a Doctor, so I won't guess. Whatever it is, remember that people here are hoping and praying for you and your Dad. Life isn't always about cars.

I won't pretend to know anything about diabetes (cause I don't), but I do know that liver s*** requires a lot of persistence. I just found out an uncle had been on dialysis (sp? not on Firefox) for almost 10 years just a few months ago!!! You could have met my uncle and never have known what was up with him.

Your dad can recover if everything goes in his direction... just stay positive dude. PM me if you want to yak while I'm down... I don't mind the long-distance minutes on my cell.

Sorry to hear about your dad. I know how frustrating it can be. My dad was diagnosed with diabetes about 4 yrs ago. On top of a plethora of other health problems. He's since had intestinal problems, a massive heart attack, 2 heart surgeries. He has a condition called Neuropathy, which is caused by diabetes. Basically all the nerve endings in the extremities begin to die off causing a pins and needles like pain. For my pops it started in his feet and he ended up at the point where he needs to use an electric scooter to get around, now it's begun in his hands.

He's 65 this year, looks 80. He went from a vibrant 61 yr old to a disabled old man almost overnight.

Don't let the doctors dick around with trying different meds to "See if it might work." That's what my family doctor did for 2 yrs or so to see what could be done for my dads high blood sugar. I kept telling my dad to get tested for diabetes but he would just argue telling me that I'm not a doctor. One of the specialists told the family that if he'd been diagnosed right away, he would've been fine and would never have had to retire early. After my pops dies someday, my sisters and I have decided that we're going to start a lawsuit against the doctor, we've all switched doctor's for ourselves.

Well, the fact that my dad is still in teh hospital means that he is, in theory, getting the best care available to him. The issue right now is the correct diagnosis of his condition and a treatment plan.

I was planning to sneak out this afternoon to see him if I can get away from the office. I want to be able to speak to a doctor there and find out what the hell is going on.

UPDATE

Okay, I'm starting to wonder about the doctors up in that hospital (Southlake Regional)

I called my dad this afternoon before I wanted to go to the hospital. He sounded even worse than yesterday and from what I can get him to tell me, they did a THIRD biopsy on his liver! I mean at this rate the hospital will kill him before whatever it is thats wrong with him does!

Tomorrow afternoon I'm heading up there and grabbing a doctor for a chat

Well, it's been a while since my last update to this thread...

After a bit of a recovery, my father's condition has done a major backslide again. They still have no idea what's causing his liver to malfunction, but he's yellow eyed and mustard coloured skin again and on morphine for pain "over his whole body" (his words to the nurse)

What's worse however is what he told me in private after my stepmother had left to go home (She'd been there most of the day and needed a break)

His exact words were "I've seen the lawyer and the arrangements have been made"

...and when I try to cajole him by saying the only way I'm letting him walk outta there is under his own power on his own two feet, his response to me was "We'll see, we'll see"

God right now my head is going a million miles an hour but nothing is getting done :(

Sorry, but I just needed to vent again...

I don't know your dad, but if it was me, I'd do the same thing just to be thorough and just to be responsible. Please don't assume he's given up.

As long as your dad is more angry than resigned ... as long as he continues to participate in his own care and hold the doctors accountable ... as long he continues to believe he's got something valuable to stick around for - those are all good things and will help him get through this.

All the best.

Sorry to hear about your Dad's ongoing health problems. Have the results of his biopsies come back? Your Dad is being very inteligent about preparing for his future, as scary as he may think it may be. As they say, be prepared for the worst and pray for the best. Unfortunately for everyone else involved, you have no control over his future, which is probably the worst part of the whole ordeal. Just hang in there and spend as much time as you can with him, he needs to see his family around him right now.

Well, my plan for today when I go up there is corner one of his doctors or at least get contact information because I want to hear it straight from the doctor, this middle man stuff is for the freakin' birds

Hopefully the new drugs they're supposed to be giving him today will help...

I know logically that he's preparing for anything... but I don't want to even think about that for him :( -sigh-

On the upside, with all this highway driving I've been getting some insanely good fuel consumption numbers :P

My father today succumbed to his illness at 11:45EDT...

I think I'm going to go cry in a corner (again...)
