He drove a goldght brown metallic 1970 something Firebird and the manouever is indeed named after his character. I know you're not suppossed to trust anyone over 30 but trust me on this one.

Here you go kids, no one believes me but I bet you'll believe SCC right?
Google: "Rockford files" firebird stunt and hit #3 is: The Ultimate Streetcar Challenge: Gross Display of Horsepower You remember the "Rockford Files," right? By Josh Jacquot Photography: SCC Staff You know, the '70s detective show starring James Garner as Jim Rockford, private investigator? Rockford lived in a trailer near the beach, rarely got paid by his clients, spent much of his time snooping around in other people's s**t and, like most of editor Oldham's heroes, drove an F-body. The Firebird, which was as much the star of the show as was Garner, knew only one truly impressive dynamic move. The Rockford, as it's become known, is a technically difficult bit of automotive gymnastics which begins by reversing at full throttle, flicking the steering wheel quickly in one direction then back straight as momentum reels the nose of the car 180 degrees the other direction. If done well, the driver is able to jam the car in a forward gear as it rotates and flee the scene with both drive wheels smoking in one fluid move. Garner (or his stunt drivers) did it well. Mani Jayasinghe did it better. http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/uscc/0303scc_uscc12/ :P :P :P :P :P
