Timing Belt Question

Hey guys,

This weekend I noticed that I have a small crack in my timing belt, so I thought ohh s**t.

A friend of mine that works in the parts department at a Ford dealer thinks I might be able to get it replaced under warranty.

My car has 65,000 kms, and I've got the extended warranty.

Now, is there such thing as warranty on a wear item like this?

I've got aftermarket cam gears on my car, so I was thinking if it could be passed under warranty, I could put stock cam gears back on if needed.

Whats the cost of the belt alone? I heard the labour cost is about $200.

My cam gears have to be re-installed anyways, so I was thinking of getting a performance shop to retime them, and install the new belt at the same time.

i think there would be becuase a belt shouldnt crack at 65000 km they should last longer then that.......i would take it in......and if they give you any hasile....tell them you will take your business some where else and they will do it for you.....trust me on this one.....

According on my dealer, the timing belt is supposed good until 200 000km but we should inspect it visually at 100 000km.

But if you have aftermarket cam gears, probably the replacement cannot be passed under warranty, except if the gears installation has done by a dealer.

The belt is not expensive at all. I would replace it.

the dealer charges a lot of money for this, because they take extra steps that they don't need to.

Don't think of showing up there with aftermarket cam gears though. :o

I don't know if it's even worth it to put the stock gears back on, get it done, then put the aftermarket on again... :unsure:

Belt OEM: 75$ and 2 hours are needed to change it.

The Ford publications say 200,000 km as replacement. My dealer's documentation doesn't say anything about visual inspection <_<

I have to get mine done...maybe this month. I'll be hitting 160K probably in two weeks.

But for 2 hours of labour and a $75 part, that ain't bad.

Belts and such are an iffy item. They can be considered "wear and tear".

That being said, pull out your extended warranty papers and look at it closely. A lot of times, these extended warranties won't cover belts or hoses. Many just cover physical mechanical and electronic parts. Ford has a few levels of extended warranty. Even then, you'd have to pay a specific deductible.

That being said, if you're on good terms with your dealer, they may do a "goodwill" repair. However, to pull that off, you really need to make a stink or have a lot of business with them (forcing the walking of your wallet).

I've got the base care extended package, and the service writer was pretty sure it wasn't covered.

It is a ware item, but since it has so little clicks on it I thought I might be lucky, but nope. I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet. :angry:

All wear and tear items have only a 12,000 mile warrenty coverage.. NO exception. There is no way that you can get this changed under warrenty.. even if your dad owned that place. Now getting it down free because of a friend is another story :ph34r:
