Ya but theres also alot of competitions that the focus has absolutely no chance in!
dyno.. the evo has 300 from the factory?
track.. no way the focus will keep up with the evo or even the mini for that matter
1/4 mile.. another tough call!
looks.. well the evo is gonna be 3/4 carbonfibre so my money is on it!

i dunno i just think its a little unfair thats all. I think it would of been better suited facing off against a pontiac pursuit and a matrix or somethin

the focus has a good chance against the Mini

'07 Mini:
curb weight: 2646
Weight distribution: 63/37
Engine displacement: 1.6L
HP: 175 (turbo'd), 120 (non turbo)
TQ: 177 (turbo'd), ~120 (non turbo?)

'08 focus:
curb weight: 2751
weight distribution: 51/49
Engine displacement: 2.0L
HP: 140
TQ: 136

technically, they should be able to boost that focus beyond anything the mini can handle, which will more than make up for any weight differential (which, if done right, should be negligible).

[edit] .. let's see how an EVO IX measures up..

EVO IX:
curb weight: 2888 lb–3086 lb
weight distribution: 60/40
Engine displacement: 2.0L
HP: 272
TQ: 294

The EVO has plenty of advantages... including AYC, A stout engine, etc. But it still has less than perfect weight distribution, and the AYC can interfere with any HP mods -- so they could easily build a laggy, overpowered beast... and to be honest, with built internals, the focus won't be THAT far behind IMO.

It shouldn't be a problem for the focus to smoke the mini -- the EVO will present a bigger challenge in my opinion.

yup, and i think if you weigh the numbers and potential, the focus isn't exactly outclassed here -- it should beat the mini hands down.. and I think it stands a decent chance against the EVO..

not sure how AYC will hurt hp mods on the evo? i was under the impression the AWD fairies don't care how much hp they get.. and the AYC in fact helps because it allows the extra hp to get to the ground? explain pls?

a % increase tuning contest is kinda dumb.. its like honda guys quoting hp/L figures when they stick up for how awesome honda cars are

i agree with how SCCA handles modified cars.. stick em all in a modified class and fastest time around the course wins

Many advance traction control programs and active yaw control (or ESP) systems operate on the known parameters of things such as break torque of the wheels, engine output (load/torque/whatever0 at given throttle percentages, etc.

If you add a boatload of HP, or even change the brake balance a significant amount, AYC and TC can begin either overcompensating or undercompensating...

While the big brake kit on my focus didn't seem to affect it's stability assist program (aka AYC, ESP), the traction control did strugge a bit with the supercharger. It would constantly over-brake if the wheels started spinning.. a minor nuisance that could be fixed by hitting the advance trac button.

if we are taking about a US market EVO 8 or EVO 9 they didn't come with AYC.. just a center diff that varies torque split f/r dynamically in the evo9 and evo8 mr (non mr evo8 just had a center diff without computer controlled clutches)

the goal of AYC (and DCCD in the STi and the center diff in the EVO 8 and 9 ) is changing torque split via clutches in the center diff not keeping the car or wheels from spinning by reducing engine output or braking individual wheels.. that's why the amount of power doesnt matter (believe me if these trick center diffs hurt modding the entire awd/turbo community would be in a huge uproar)

the systems will just keep splitting the torque.. there is no braking or engine output reduction happening anywhere as a result of the center diff systems.. so there is no over/under braking or engine output loss issues that arise from having the computer controlled AWD fairies in your center diff

All I have to say is that they could have started with "just" a Ralliart Lancer and made it fair. But they didn't. If anything about the stock cars comes into play at all in the judging, the Focus either has the most to gain or the most to lose.

Stock EVO - near godlike. Who cares what pimp panels get slapped onto it, it's just fearsome. Children will be s***ting themselves if they're trying to cross the street and one of the new EVO Xs come ripping by. :ph34r:

Mini - quite the little track day car when done right and it doesn't need much to get it there. A bit more boost won't kill it (at least during the course of a photo/video shoot), who cares what happens afterward. It's too cute to successful turn into something mean-looking, but at least they can improve on the curb appeal. Hopefully. :lol:

Focus - Randy, I hope you brought a horseshoe, the horse and a whole f***ing stable with you. You're going to need it. It's not that it needs a turbo (which it does), cause the turbo is cake. This is year 6 for the Duratec with FI as far as FS is concerned. It's actually making it work with a weaker-for-tuners platform that poses a problem... a huge one. Doubly so if Ford has f***ed with the suspension again, rendering it incompatible with 06-07 suspension bits.

Where's my "impending doom" smiley? :iono:

Ah.. gotcha.. I thought AYC used the brakes as part of an overall stability strategy (otherwise, why call it Active Yaw Control?).. anyhoo.. you're 100% correct in the active center diff issue.. HP shouldn't matter.

dp... you might be right that later versions of AYC have braking control.. there is some 'super all wheel control' (S-AWC) that sounds like it integrates all of the evo's electronics and that definitely has braking control built in.. i really have no clue how that tech works or how it is setup to intervene.. maybe it is smart enough to understand when the driver wants ridiculous yaw angles in the gravel or snow and helps you 4wheel drift like takumi.. i have no clue.. but i suspect there is some serious tech in place there to keep it from being an overly protective nanny like the MB systems

Damn, good luck to the FS team. I just caught the first episode of this last night on SPEED. I knew that the 08 Focus was on the show but against an EVO and a new turbo Cooper S. Talk about apples to oranges out of the box. You guys make a good arguement for the Focus though. I'll be following this build for sure.
Also nice to put some faces to some famous names from the FS crew.

The FS car stands a decent chance. Raffi is a decent driver, I think they will hit 350whp. Still enough.....I hope. We can only hope those other guys are so cocky with their huge turbos they put a hole in their block....

Less skanks, more cars...thats what I realy want tho...
