Truck driver charged in lumber spill on Hwy 400

A Quebec truck driver has been charged with careless driving in connection with a large lumber spill on Highway 400 that snarled traffic for five hours this morning.
The truck was travelling on Highway 88 near Barrie at about 6 a.m. when it took a turn too fast, flipped on its side and spilled its load across Highway 400, Ontario Provincial Police said.
The truck and its 33 skids, containing 132,000 pounds of wood, forced the closure of all southbound lanes and all but one of the northbound lanes.
Police and fire officials picked up some pieces of lumber by hand to open the northbound lane, police said.
The mess caused bumper-to-bumper headaches for angry motorists and morning commuters who sat in traffic that stretched back 10 kilometres.
Some tried to get out of the jam by reversing up the onramps.
The driver of the truck was not seriously hurt.
The lumber has since been picked up and all lanes have reopened.
