Mazdaspeed3 Test Drive

^^ I agree with D-Dub, although HIDs are just a step above and I'd opt for some in a heartbeat.

As for the limited torque in 1st and 2nd, I wasn't aware of that. It makes sense for the estimate, now that I think about it. But consider this: with that setup, who the hell WOULDN'T want AWD and all the juice all the time?

Daily driver 1: 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport "S"

33" BFG Mud-Terrain KM2s, lots of Rough Country gear - bumper, 2.5" lift, swaybar disconnects, Superwinch 10,000lb winch, Detroit Locker in rear D44 axle, custom exhaust, K+N filtercharger, Superchips-tuned.

Daily driver 2: 2006 Subaru Legacy GT

COBB Stage 1+ package - AccessPort tuner, COBB intake and airbox. Stage 2 coming shortly - COBB 3" AT stainless DP and race cat, custom 3" Magnaflow-based exhaust and Stage 2 COBB tune.

Wouldn't all the juice, all the time just be a custom tune away? :)

As long as the rest of the powertrain can take the full juice you unleash with the new tune.

We just got our first speed 3 in at Burlington Mazda, Only going to be offered in red....I haven't driven it yet but a couple of people where disappointed, we'll just say ITS NOT AN SRT-4 beater, Turbo kick out at around 5800 just like the speed 6.....It just needs more tuning....

You can get a used 05 or 06 Mustang GT for less than 30K, with low kms, and at least 50 more hp, and 50 more ft lbs, which can easily be increased a lot...

The Speed3 looks like a well, rounded package for the money though...

The handling is nothing better than average for that platform with the right config. The performance, as Flo said, is disappointing. AND, it weighs over 3100 lbs in curb weight alone. That makes performance nutjobs sad. :(

Two strikes against it:

One is the speed governor (What? they couldn't afford to put hotter tires on it?)

Two and more troubling is the porker weight, god that just screams "Lazy engineering" (IOW boost the sucker out the wazoo to make up for the weight, makes for a peaky ride I would think)

Current copy of Motor Trend: Mini Muscle. MazdaSpeed3 vs WRX. I briefly read it on the stand a few days ago, and they liked the Mazda much better.

Only in 0-60 was the WRX 'better' after 60 the Mazda killed it. And They loved the fact the WRX was AWD that a FWD car was still superior to it.

Well after 60 it makes sense - less parasitic loss, more power and torque because after 2nd it's making what it should be making all the time, plus 6 cogs means shorter gears and less time out of the powerband. It's not exactly rocket science.

Still... I'd rather have a WRX.

^^--- or it could just be the much simpler, "once the FWD car is moving, the advantage of AWD in a straight line is lost"..

ding ding ding!!

like ive said before if the MS3 had a sticky set of tires and its real power in 1 & 2, i think it would be a lot closer out of the hole!

Well... that's what Mazda probably compromised on to make it a great dependable daily driver. If I had to replace the Focus in the future (time will only tell), i'd love to get the S40, but I really think the MS3 tops it. Must be my taste changing... :D

since all of this electronic intervention is controlled by the pcm its only a matter of time before a turner has it set up to run balls out in 1st and 2nd.  then all you need is a good set of DR's and you will own all.

i wanna see one run a stock SRT4.  cause me know this is way more of a car than that neon.
