From this news article
Quote:Ford CEO, Allan Mulally has announced that the next generation small and midsize cars from the Blue Oval will be global cars. This means that models like the Ford Focus, which differs from the model in Europe will finally be the same car.
Ford is also working on a compact B-segment car that will be sold in the US and Europe based off the new Mazda2.
The time frame for the new global cars was not announced, although analysts predict that the next Focus in 2010 or 2011 will be global and the Fusion should move to the new platforms sometime in the next decade. The cars will not be identical, but will share common platforms.
Ok.. so maybe not 100% the same thing, but if they could just bring the chasis and engine choices over, i'd be happy...

well we sorta already knew it was coming, but reality is the new Focus will be global, and the Fusion will be Mondeo based under the skin... plus I heard that ford is going to remove quite a few platforms from their line up and use something like 10 or so.
Given that car companys go with the 4 year new car / refresh rule it should break down like this.
Focus - 2012 (fall 2011)
Fusion - Refresh due in 2009 (started a spy pics thread of it) so 2013 (fall 2012)
F-150 - 2009 (fall 2008)
Escape - 2012 (Fall 2011)
Taurus - 2012?
Flex - 2009 (debut fall 2008)
Edge - 2011 ?
Fiesta / Escort - 2010 - 2011?

yeah but didnt ford try that with the original Focus?
they cant do it, its too expensive to bring the same car over. ppl will not pay for it so it will just like last time around.
Sorry for being negative, but they have been saying this one toomany times.

I thought the problem with the focus was that instead of bringing the same car over they tried to reengineer it here.
Either way I won't hold my breath.

they had issues bringing the exact same car over, but this plan is to bring over the platform..
So it may not look entirely the same or be equiped the same, but the underlying platform will be the same -- much like the Euro focus ST and the mazda speed 3.
This could mean good things for us!
or maybe not...

I'd like to see them globalize their engine line up personally.
It boggles my mind how they can produce diesels overseas that are spectacular, both in terms of efficiency and power for their displacement. Yet on this side of the pond they treat diesel engines like a dispised relative :(

It's because our diesel here sucks - it's a much lower grade fuel than overseas and the sulphur content is through the roof compared to the EU. I forget the exact technical reasons, but they'd have to redo the diesels LARGE just to run on the sludge at our pumps right now.

well hopefuly the new diesel will give the europeans some hope to bring over their cars here.
I think we will see lot of changes with in few years.
So far we got diesel BMW, MB, VW, coming to canada as of 08
we are also getting the new Accord and CRV diesel coming to canada soon. Hopefully 09
I think companies are realizing Diesels are lot cheaper and more practical to make compared to hybirds. But time will tell

I believe low sulfur diesel is being mandated by the government now.. so it's just a matter of time before we can run euro-diesel engines.

If there's a decent Focus hatch in 2011, I'd likely buy one.
