Exactly! It's too bad they went to water-cooled engines. The sound of an air-cooled flat-6 is almost unholy when it's wound out. I've been in/driven a 964 and a 993 now and as quick as the new 996/997s are, I'm not sure I'd want one. It's just... not right.
If I ever got a Porsche newer than a 1995, it would be a Cayman or a Boxster with the hardtop (S model, natch). I could always change my mind between now and then ;)
A 964 cruising along at 3000 RPMs and then getting "the hammer dropped" :P is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

Whenever a parts supplier hired a new boy/girl, my mechanic friends would try to be the first to get them with the 'can I get a water pump for this Porsche?'.

You can't beat the "status" of a 911, but a decent Cayman S goes nicely as well. Porsches really are total package cars.
Attaboy, Nate ;) :P
