Hey,
I have scheduled an appointment at the dealership this week for the timing belt to be changed. I was burned on my last Focus (an '04) when at 130K the tension wheel spring broke sending the timing for a sh!t which pooched the motor in short order. I am only at 90K but the car is an '02 so I'd rather be safe than sorry. Does this sound logical?
Also, is there anything else I should consider while I'm getting the timing belt changed?

I did the same with my 02 at 85k (this past summer) 10 years is a long time for a belt, for the money its better than doing a motor.

How much is the dealer charging you? Only reason i ask is because I have the special tools @ my work to do it, and it wont be nearly as pricey (Im assuming lol).

But the ZETEC is not an interference motor...?? unless it was a SVT everything should have been just a simple replacement...
EDIT: I just read SPI, I had two SPI's blow a belt and it was a direct swap of a new belt on them too...they were old escorts tho..
$800 is steep for a belt change on something as simple as our cars, not much work really. I did my first belt on the SVT in 2h, so it should take seasoned mechanics that long or less.
To do it RIGHT it is probably 200 in parts from FORD, but even @ 150/h its no way it takes them 4 hours to do this job.
While your there the water pump may aswell be replaced.

Belt change on a zetec is crazy easy. no more than a two hour job tearing everything apart and putting it back together and thats doing it yourself.
Your waterpump isn't that critical to change because its not driven by the timing belt, its driven by the serpentine belt so you can easily change that later on down the road if needed without tearing to far down.
The things you will want to change is definitely the pulleys. idlers and tentioner, and the belt of coarse.
If the timing belt it rotting I would also suggest changing your serpentine belt while its off as well.

Mine was just over $500 plus tax including replacing the water pump at the same time.

We can do it for $240 labour+ parts. We only use OEM stuff, so if your interested shoot me your VIN so I can contact the dealer for part pricing. BTW im also assuming you live in the southern ontario region lol. Our shop is located in sauga.

I did my serpentine belt this year and it was easy. Going to do my timing belt in the summer.

I have to do my water pump soon , when I put the cams and gears on I did the belt but didnt do the water pump. So that is getting done soon.

iv had mine apart so many times now its second nature lol..very easy to do, just time consuming

I brought it to the dealer (where it was to cost $800) and they couldn't get to it because someone called in sick so I took it to my local guy the next day and it only cost me $680. I don't have the skills, the facilities nor the special tools to do this on my own so I am happy with what I got.
