Code 2004: Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck open
#1
My car seems to be running fine but I keep getting this code come up. I clear it and it seems good for a week or two then it pops up again. I've checked to see what exactly a Runner Control does but I get conflicting answers on what to do about it. From what I understand there's a vacuum beside the throttle body, some people say take it off and clean it our but it sure looks like it's one piece. Other people say take the manifold cover off and clean the buttlerflys with throttle body cleaner. What's your guys' take?

It is probably a vacuum issue.
IIRC you can manually push down on a lever in the to open the flaps up. But you may not be able to do it while the car is on. I think the positive pressure keeps the lever in the down position...

Anyway run some Seafoam through the system and take the vacuum lines off and clean them out.

Good luck.

So your saying I have to remove the intake manifold and clean inside?

No, Take the bottle of seafoam and remove the line hooked to the Fuel Regulator on the middle of the Fuel Rail.

While the car is idling, stick the hose in the bottle. Make the line sip at first and then stick it in to make it stall. You make need a second person of be quick on your feet to turn the car off if it won't stall out and shut off on it's own.

Wait a min or two and hook the lines back then go for a little drive. The fluid is now sitting just before the flaps so you will need to drive higher then 3000RPM to force the fluid passed the flaps and into the engine. Best to do all of this in a parking lot. There will be lots of smoke when doing this lol.

This all sounds crazy but it cleans everything out to a point. To really get all burnt carbon off of engine parts you would need to do this several times and let set for much longer times.

This video is on a Zetec and they have no flaps to stop fluid from staying in Intake manifold.

But all this being said did you check all the connections lol

Sounds a bit beyond my ability so I think I'll just let my mechanic take care of it. Thanks for the input.
