Just need some feedback. I have been considering moving to the country by next March, earlier if I can get out of my lease. If I moved I would have to leave my job, and will most likely end up with a job that pays less. At this point I really don't care about the pay cut. I think that there is more to life than making more money, such as being happy and less stressed. So far I keep getting 'you really need to think about this more.' from the people I've talked to, and one life is short, go for it. I have been considering this for a while now and I have been made an offer to make this happen in the near future.

I probably make considerably less than most "IT guys", especially Systems Administrators, but hell... anyone who has seen the view here understands why I don't want to ever leave.
Plus, I don't know where else I can get the house I just bought for the price I just paid
It's economy of scale. If the pure numbers don't matter (and they shouldn't), then you're laughing. Take the offer.
Those who want 7 figures in their retirement portfolios aren't living responsibly / thinking realistically. That, and they're ruled by the greed that will surely consume them.

whoops... sorry,
back on topic.
Its a tough call. in my case i'd definatley consider the amount of the paycut. How will that affect your quality of life. Do you spend or do you save.
What kind of job will you take there? etc..
there's always a possibility that the stress and stuff will be the exact same.
Alot of factors to consider there.

If you search through my posts...you'll find at least 3-4 threads about me quitting my job and finding something new!!
I am the king of quitting jobs to improve my life. I do it at least 2 times a year but I'm on my 4th job since last summer....and no..I dont get fired...I keep leaving when I get tired of the b.s. or the boss, or the politics and I leave with no fear.
There are billions of jobs out there and I have done everything you can imagine, I make $15.00/hour washing cars right now,.....do I care...HELLS NO....I'm happy, I get to work outside, I actually got a tan this year and I still provide for me and my daughter...so...
Bottom line...do what you feel is right...nobody is gonna look out for you...If a change is what you need and moving, quitting your job gets you to a better point in your life...JUST DO IT!!!
Life truly is too short to keep holding your breath waiting for 'things' to pan out...
I dunno if I'm making sense but, my choices over the last 24 years have got me this far..and I honestly have no regrets..!!

you know you can say that life is too short and that you have to live it the way you want to till you're blue in the face. Fact of the matter is, in this world there is no way of ending up "happy" without a good sized retirement savings fund ready when you need it. I think it should be everyone's ultimate goal to be employed in the highest paying job possible (even if they don't like it) up till the age of 50. After that, if you've worked your tail off, you can enjoy the next 20 - 30 years. If taking a pay cut means you save yourself from a heart attack/nervous breakdown then sobeit... but aside from that, work to make yourself the most money. Pay off a mortgage, get yourself on your feet with a property in your name all paid off and you're doing well

Thats really a super duper cookie-cutter lifestyle Al but, not everyone thinks that way....Me personally, I think living everyday like its your last is the way to go....
You never know when you will be walking to work and you get shot, or runn down..or something..
and all you were doing was walking to work to make big money that will now go to your ungrateful family cause your dead!!!

Any 25 year old who puts in $300 per month into a RRSP will have over a million by the time he/she is 65, 8% ROI assumed.
Play with your own numbers:

It's not that hard the trick is to have it deducted automatically so you never touch the money. It's called "pay yourself first" in personal finance speak.

But who cares if your cost of living eats it up anyways. It all balances out in the end. It really does. Those who have a truly capitalist view of things are missing the boat.

I think it honestly comes down to what you want to do, make money and be miserable or make less money and enjoy yourself. Sounds trite I know, but at the end of the day, what you want from life is what matters right?

That $million is chump change to retire on now, never mind 40 years from now. Buy some Ford stock :P
Do whatever job ya want or need to do, and live with the consequences. Just don't be surprised how fast time goes by. Work is not my life and life is not my work!

Thanks guys. I'm not worried about retiring any time soon, and have two RRSP accounts, which I contribute to monthly. I am definately highly considering this. I have been at the same place for almost five years now, and can't believe it has been that long. I think now is the time for change. Really there is nothing holding me back right now in life, no children to think about etc.

I would do it.
As far as retirement savings... look for ways to earn residual income. The key being that when you stop working the money keeps coming in. I'm pretty sure that for 99% of the people here if they stop working, the pay stops as well. Imagine getting paid for work you did five years ago ;)

Ive been dealing with this mntal dilema for a while.
Personally, id rather be doing a job i love for 50,000 a year, than a job i hate for 100,000 a year. Thats just me.
Im with bunny on this. You never know when your gonna go, enjoy everyday to its fullest.
Id rather have a lower paying job, save enough to retire on comfy, then work like a peurto rican till im 65, and have oodles of money, for what? A cadillac with a wheel chair in the trunk, and abottle of viagra?
Some people are fortunate enough to have a job that pays well and they love some arnt, you gotta decide what you would rather have more, money or happiness.
I wish my grass was Emo, so it would cut itself...
