I idle @ 30-32C, full load @ 40-45C depending on ambient.

Custom plexi full tower case, Winchester 3200+ @ 2.4GHz, 1.575 vCore, Venus 12HSF and OCZ Ultra 5+ thermal grease.

For you guys with Venice core chips (S939 Rev. E), make sure it's getting 1.4V and not 1.5V to the core. The same was true of the Winchesters (rev. D) before the BIOS updates were issued by each mobo manufacturer.

The BIOS wouldn't understand the revision of the CPU in the microcode (CPUID) and would erroneously assume it was an earlier 1.5v part.

Scooba - I had to run at work before I could answer earlier. What thermal grease / thermal interface material is on your HSF?

My board fed my CPU 1.3v instead of the 1.4v. Ran perfectly stable so I was like meh, even got it to overclock up to 2.25 GHz like that, that's when I noticed actually cuz i went in to adjust. I think I'm running stock voltage and 2.4 GHz. Yay!


oh, and that new Asus board with the like 8-phase power looks sweet!

Looking at the Zalman 7700, 9500 or the thermalright Xp-120 or XP90c

which would be better for overclocking?

IMHO, if you can't OC on the Venus 12 with good thermal grease (AS5/OCZ U5+) then you probably have bigger issues than the heatsink.

No offense of course. I'd stick with Thermalright over the Zalman stuff. They're ok (Zalman) but their quality seems to be lacking at times. Thermalright alwasy seems to knock it out of the park. I'd go XP120 if that's the road you want, but you'll need to check for clearanaces around the socket to accomodate something of that size.

I can overclock on the venus 12. no problem... for the brief 2 weeks i had the 3700+ San diego... i was easily able to get it to 2.5ghz..

my problem is with all the added heat of the geforce my cases ambient temp is always hovering around 35-40 degrees... my room is pretty warm itself.

I just want to be able to have the cpu running safley at 2.8... under 50 degrees with a low fan speed so i can sleep at night.

The venus 12 is just too loud at full fan speed.

Also, I'm using Arctic silver 5...

with the fan on at about 3000 rpm now it idles at 48. with the fan on full it will go down to 43 degrees.

Eventually i want to go watercooled. if only my case had more room i'd go with an Aquagate mini for now. or a bigwater SE.

The San Diego is a 2.2GHz part. You're extending it 600MHz beyond stock spec, which is quite the feat for any overclocker, especially on air.

I run my Venus 12 @ 4600 RPM (as reported by SpeedFan) and the same for Sara's venice 3500+ (2.2GHz @ 2.53GHz) and it's noticeable but not THAT loud. It could also be attributed in part to the acoustical properties of the case.

With that said, moving to a larger diameter fan with a lower rotational speed will almost certainly rectify the problem. My real concern would be the quality of the copper base for the heatsink, number of heatpipes (if any), and whether it's a push/pull dual-fan design or a single fan.

Duals are my favourite. Let me find a link to a personal fave cooler in that config.

EDIT - just read your other reply. What processor, speed and voltage are you running?

There's no way you should be idling that hot. I idled that hot with a stock Winchester (hotter than the Venice Rev. E cores) and the stock PIB aluminum heatsink and 60mm fan, OCZ Ultra 5+.

sorry adam, i should have clarified..

I had the 3700+ Last week, i actually sold that. (had it running at 2.5 stable) ran nice and cool too... 45 degrees under load.

Now i'm using an FX55 Clawhammer... i want to get that at fx57 speeds

What do you guys think of the aquagate mini? It will take a bit of extra work to install it. but it may be worth it.

It will be a bit harder to install due to the stupid tool free thermaltake design. all the fans snap into place. so i'll have to remove the plastic and fab up a new bracket.

Well i did some more research on the Aquagate. and i'll be staying as far away from that as possible... cracked waterblocks. 1-2 degrees temprature difference between air cooling... bleh

I can't recall if this was mentioned. But organized the wires in your case can also have a great impact. My Friend finally did it to his case, got him 5-6C.

Steve, I think pretty much any all copper / copper pipe / aluminum fin cooler will work for you with either a 80mm high CFM fan or a bigger and lower rotational speed fan with the same CFM or better.

The Clawhammer is a 130nm part, running at a higher voltage. It's also an earlier revision so it doesn't have the latest design advances in the chip architecture... thus leading it to run hotter again.

I'd say you'd need to see how the actual airflow is in the case... with that many fans, your ambient (best judged by your HDD temperature minus 5-6C at idle) temperature should be aiding the heatsink to the point that this isn't an issue, even with a CG-stepping 130nm FX-55.

Otherwise, post up what CPU-Z reports your model and revision as.

Nice numbers... OCZ platinum is fantastic... the only thing is the 2gb dual channel kit runs as 2-3-2-5...

If i try to run it at 2-2-2-5 its unstable... bleh.

and at 2-3-2-5 - at 400mhz... i can only pull 5100 mb/s

I'm going to go with the zalman. i figure i'll start with a more efficent heatsink and possibly do a fan mod to it.

With my fan on full the cpu is only 4 degrees above case temp...
which is 15 degrees above ambient. I think i need a bigger case because that geforce is heating it up something fierce
