Another "rattles And Squeaks" Post.
#1
I know theres been a million posts about squeaks in the focus, but after driving tonight I had to add to the list. I guess this is a rant/question.

Theres a new F****ING sqeauk coming from the drivers side door, I dunno maybe its just the cold weather but I hate it.

Any secret way (other than the usual " turn up the stereo" method) to get rid of them?

My door handles rattle nicely with the stereo up past 1/4.

Add more bass. It cancels out the mid-range rattle by bringing the door into synch with the rest of the car :P

Loosen every screw and bolt on the door, and then tighten them up to proper torque....or just hum really loud.

Yup got some stupid driver's door 'wire slapping' sound when I'm driving on the freeway, highway. Real piss off. I actually thought it was the underbody glow kit I had on my car that I never used but after removing it, yup damn sound still there.

I gave up on it, turn up the IPOD, good to go.....

Dynamat your doors.

And if your running audio.....Undo the door panels and re-tighten.

What does undoing and retightening do? I've never heard of that.

I get a lot of wind noise coming from my doors... not around the weatherstripping, but around the door handle area.

Again maybe some spray foam or dynamat.

I dynamatted my trunk and the road noise was reduced quite a bit.

Dynamat is great for insulating for sound and road noise, but I've heard it weighs a lot. I've never used it, but you'll probably have to remove interior pieces to compensate for the added weight.

if I had Anthony's wife on MY long drives, we'd certainly have a lot more problems to deal with than road noise.

Thankfully, I have my own mouthpeice to nag away :D

 Don't listen to the self appointed autocross experts who say that. Those who strip their interior for the sake of autocrossing/racing their 16 second bucket of crap, automatically waive their right to complain about added weight and road noise.

A roll of dynamat weighs what, 20 pounds at best? How much do your subs weigh? How much does your girlfriend weigh? How much do the jugs of antifreeze/windshield washer fluid/oil/jumper cables/tools in your trunk weigh?

I'm sorry, but adding 20 pounds to my car for the sake of a annoyance-free drive is money and weight damn well spent.

For every 100lbs you lose, you shave off a tenth of a second on the quarter mile approximately. A TENTH OF A SECOND FOR 100 LBS!!! Do you realize how insignifcant that time difference is? And how much you have to strip to reduce the weight by 100 lbs?

Gee, might as well drain all your oil and antifreeze if you wanna save weight.

When I ran into this problem with my 1996 Contour I took all the screws out and used some pieces of rubber cut into circles with a hole in the center as washers between the parts. It Eliminated most of the squeaks in the doors. As for the wind noise from the mirrors and handles, none of those parts are air tight from the factory. Face it this is an economy car not a Mercedes S Class. Cut some thin strips of dynamat, or similar damping sheet, and place it over the areas the air is coming in from. cut a hole for the wiring, bolts, etc that need to move freely. Make sure the piece of material is flush across the opening. The wind noise should be gone from the doors aside from the drag the handles produce. For the mirrors, just take them off and look at the piece of foam ford has in there. That's your answer to why they are so noisy, that stuff is useless. "Dynamat" this surface as well then replace that foam. The foam absorbs sound but does not deflect it or absorb any vibration.

Just be glad the Focus is more well made than the Contour was. My 3 year old 1996 Contour received it's first audio system in 1999 with 45K on the odometer. A 10" Clarion sub, a PG QX2180, a CDA-7838, and alpine 6.5" coax door speakers. I wasn't sure what was louder, the ratlles buzzing or the system. I'm close to four years in the ZX5, 88K, and a much harder existence, and the car is still fairly rattle free even with everything I have in the car now, including a 15" sub. My windshield physically moves with the music alot of the time and everything is doing fine.
Luke.
