and as for shoot first ask questions later.. what would you guys prefer.. the owner of the vehicle going up the guy and saying.. oh excuse me sir. please stop trying to steal my car.. shoo bad person shoo.. ooo oo or better yet.. he should have said.. oh you must want to sell this car to feed your poor starving family.. here please take the keys.. and take the keys for my other car too..

the guy is friggin STEALING SOMEONE'S CAR!!! how can you have any type of sympathy of him?!?!?!

EDIT: that avatar was def not cool.... but i still do think he was in the right for protecting his property

you know, my initial thought would be to kill the thief, but honestly, the situation could have been handled without nearly killing a human being, and without putting holes in the car because the guy is a poor shot. For every bullet that doesn't stop in the thief, innocents are put at risk.

The family was not in danger, but he still took it upon himself to take the thief's and possibly innocent lives into his own hands.

I'm just amazed that people think that killing someone outright is a just thing to do.. the thief deserves to go to jail and/or get the snot beaten out of him, but killing him? when does the right to bear arms to protect yourself turn into the right to kill a man because he doesn't have respect for your property. I don't deny having the right to protect your property, but if your person is not in jeopardy, the shooter had no right to fire 4 rounds at the theif.

I think it's pathetic it took him 4. One should have been good. I think the problem should be americans before they can buy guns should have to go take some gun courses to learn to shoot.

The guy was an idiot to leave the safety of his house in the first place - even armed. For all he knew the thief could have had a partner/lookout, he could have been armed and a better shot than him; there could have been a whole range of factors not in his favour.

Handguns are notoriously inaccurate in the hands of amateurs at the best of times; and under stressful situations even more so.

I can still picture that video of the guy trying to shoot another guy outside a courthouse -- they were literally within touching distance with a 2 inch tree between them -- the one guy must have fired six or eight shots and the other guy was still standing.

Like I said....just let your barking dogs go after him. Shooting him is asking for retalation once hes healed.

if he let the dogs out and they mauled him, the dude might sue and try to get his dogs put down... i kinda give him props for trying to do the job himself instead of getting his dogs involved. in dog vs human situations in court the dog always loses, even though i think a lot of the times it human stupidity that brought it on in the first place.

and as for taking the shot when he did.. so maybe now the guy and his family wasn't in danger.. but what if the car thief got way with it.. and maybe a couple of more times.. and then decides.. hey this sh!t is way too easy.. let me try to move up to invading ppl's houses, or maybe just car jack someone's ride at gun point.. its hard to say... perhaps i am stretching it.. but my stealing someone's car or attempting to.. its clear this dude is playing fast and loose with his moral outlook.. and as for jail.. why bother.. he's just a THIEF.. friggin burden to society wasting our resources to keep him alive.. i'd save the jail space for people who may or may not be guilty, and therefore can't be put down.. but this time.. the dude is so guilty.. is so clearly a criminal.. don't think i'd lose sleep seeing him go down..

The worst part about living south of the 49th is that they believe that they really are judge, jury, and executioner when you set foot on their property.

The sad reality is that their constitution allows them to do just that. There is no clear-defined line between self-defence and self-moronicness. Obviously that's not a word, but I'm tired.

If he was breaking into your house, had visible accomplices breaking into your house, or otherwise offering an immediate affront to your personal safety and that of your family... by all means, defend away. I'm all for that.

When he's stealing your car - WHO CARES. IT'S A CAR. That's in caps because I can't stress that enough, and it has been said already more than once. Property can be replaced, people can't. So he's a criminal - you won't change that by shooting him and not killing him. All you're doing at that point is potentially delaying his return, perhaps with a massive chip on his shoulder.

The SRT could have been targeted for many reasons. We don't know the whole deal here. Perhaps buddy with the SRT straight-line dragged with him at an intersection the day before, beat him horribly and then flipped him the bird and gave other un-needed insults at that point. It's entirely possible. Perhaps he cut the guy off on the highway, or did something else and he was followed home? Maybe it was the chop-shop vehicle du jour?

I'm almost off on a tangent here, but what's clearly evident is that there's a flagrant disregard for life. Not just his or the thief's, but everyone's lives. He's actually showing less care and concern for his own family by just opening up on an attempted car thief than he is by picking up that miracle of science, the telephone, and then calling the cops.

Im with meford, ive seen a man shot and killed if front of my eyes, and it messes you up.

Could he have not just ran up on him and said "get on the ground" or even shoot him in the leg??

It just goes to show that the thief or the guy shooting had any moral that where any different.

And like it was mentioned before, what if the theif had a look out, he shoots at the guy stealing the car, and the look out shoots him. No wa wife has lost a husband, kids have lost their father, all for the sake of keeping their car!?!? Yeah way to protect your family.
I wish my grass was Emo, so it would cut itself...
