What is the common wall in your semi made of? If it's an older home (per 1965) the common wall is most likely made of cinder block with a small strapping of 1X2 or 1X3 overlay and then either plaster or wallboard. Any of the studfinder's would have a hard time reading the stud location if this is the case.
