Welcome to the site ... and no you're not alone.

First - 14" rims do not fit your car - Ford increased the diameter of Focus brakes by 1" beginning 2005 MY, so 15s are the smallest to fit.

I've tried both routes - putting 205 x 16" snows on the alloy rims and also 195 x 15" on steel and I prefer the 15" - the traction seems marginally better to me and the cost is less.
