sounds like he adjusted the octane scalar.. what it does, IIRC, is adjust the timing to account for engine wear over time.
I believe this actually will lower timing somewhat to remove pinging in an older engine... and is not a recommended way of tuning. You're better off having it reset to stock.
If you want a better tune, check out some solutions that FocusSport and/or Steeda has. There are aftermarket tunes out there that could get you a bit more power and better driveability out of the car.
