Protein shakes are pretty controversial. Your body can only use so much protein per day, and if it's getting more than needed, you're right, it will just get stored (like anything else). The general rule is that your body can use approximately 1g of protein per kilogram body weight for the day (take your weight in pounds and divide by 2.2 to get kilos). If each protein serving is giving you 55grams of protein, than that is almost what you need for the entire day! You don't need any more than that. Bigger is not better in this case, even though the stores are trying to sell that to you
Again though, there are better (and better tasting) ways of getting your protein. Try eating a can of tuna instead.
