Alright...K...I need to retort.
First off, I live with my girlfriend, not my parents, they live in McMurray and Toronto.
Secondly, I have paid rent, I've lived on my own in 2 separate countries for 3-4 months the first time, 6 the second, until I had to go back to school when I returned to Canada.
Thirdly, I didn't mean buying a house is stupid "ever". I meant right now, at 19, it's not the best choice he'll ever make - unless he does it right. Buy a house and rent it out, sure - good idea if you have the energy to be a landlord when you need to.. Buy a house to live in when you could still live at home? Why?
To score back some brownie points, I agree 100% that a house is a good investment, when you have the means to keep that investment alive. At 19, it's incredibly rare. I intend to buy a house when I finish university and start my career, I don't intend on buying one before, because I bounce around to 3 different countries, and I havn't decided where I'm going to live yet. Not much point in buying a house and then leaving the country..
You can lose A LOT of money with a bad move, and how many of you guys who didn't fully understand my point, knew what you know now, back when you were 19?
Like it was stated, 15k for a down payment on a house, more, or less.. 4k for parts on a car? So what if it's throwing it away cus it'll just go up in smoke when he craves more power, at least he had fun playing with it while it lasted, it's like purchasing an expensive computer, large new-tech TV, new age game console.. You wont get a return on any of them, they do nothing but depreciate in value.. so why buy them? Well some people like playing the new, more intense games.. Or like the reliability and performance of a new system for photo editing etc.. Or like the look of golf on their new 50" plasma..
What if the market for housing crashes and he has to sell.. Bought a house for 200k, and when he needs to sell (if that happens) the market will only pay 150k.. Well you just lost out.. There are a lot of "what if's" at 19 that DOES make buying a house a stupid idea.
There are also a lot of what if's that make it a great idea.. It's a gamble, though.. You're not always guaranteed to make money off a house..
<cough>
To return on the original subject at hand, though.
What are the parts you're looking to piece together for your build? What kind've pistons (if any), rods, studs, clutch, etc etc etc ? Would like to see your plans..
