I posted about this 18 months ago when Toyota overtook Ford for the number two spot globally ... in ways that really mean something (market cap and profitability) Toyota has been number one for years and has been walking away from the others for quite some time now.
Or to put it another way, GM and Ford have artificially kept their sales volumes up by virtually giving their vehicles away with low prices and high incentives - hence the 'high-sales-volume' 'no-profits' dynamic ... if GM and Ford had sold their vehicles at a profitable price for the past decade, Toyota would have passed their sales volume years ago - maybe even 6 or 7 years ago.
Ford and GMs fate was cast when they abandoned cars in favour of trucks/SUVs - and even if they changed that focus immediately they will never again dominate the world auto industry like they once did - and in fact will be lucky to even maintain a dominant position in North America.
