Torque is the amount of force your engine can exert.
HP is the amount of work your car is doing at a moment in time. Really, HP is the fudge number.
My focus and my stang made similar power. The stang makes waaaay more torque and you feel that leaving the line. If you're above 1500 RPM, it's GO GO GO... in any gear.
the focus had more HP but way less torque -- you had to pick your gears wisely, and acceleration didn't kick in nearly as early... granted of course that mathematically, the more torque you have down low, the more HP you'll have down low... but technically, it's the torque that's applying the force to move, not the HP.
