Sure, you can do it. But it is a chain. You don't have to do it like a belt. It is designed to be maintenance free, like your crankshaft and cam shaft bearings. It was designed to not be replaced, unlike the belt in a Zetec.

The only time I'd replace it would be at about 250,000 kms, and I was about to add boost. :D
