The way it was explained to me is:
snow is the last place you want floatation.
Sand, yes, you usually want floatation.
Staying on top of sand is best.
Snow, on top, is slippery.
A narrower tire gets your finite weight
into the deeper area of snow.
More and better bite.
And, it worked on my Ranger.
Make sense?
