I had the wiring harness in my old car set fire like that, all this was due to the IAT sensor shorting out on the EGR tube. Simple crap like that and the wires set fire. Fortunatly I found the problem and was able to trace/replace the melted nest.

Sucks to hear, hope things get resolved with minimal cost.
