My very first car was the Mercury panel van version of this truck (yup, Mercury had trucks) ... three on the tree, 192 straight six; I bought it off the guy who owned the greenhouses I worked at ... this was 1969.
At one point in time the shift linkage broke down at the base of the "tree" ... so to shift gears I propped up the engine cover (between the seats) and reached down to move the two transmission rods into the appropriate gear ... good times.
