First, use the resources on the net. A good place is Tire Rack (US). They have diagrams to explain how bolt circle, offset, backspacing and size relate. For the most part, a few millimetres offset one way or the other will not affect much. In fact, any Ford 4 bolt by 108mm diameter (Focus, new Cougar, Contour, Mystique, Tempo, Topaz, old Escort, old Mustang) wheels will fit.
But double check when you fit the wheel. On the front, turn the steering wheel as far as possible each way, bounce it and check for clearance. Bounce the rear. While it is great to just use the specifications, it is more fun to do it hands on.
Here are a few photos of my cars. The Focus has 17" SVT rims (and everything else as well is SVT). The Taurus uses 5x108 (same as new Focus) and we are using 17" rims originally on a Volvo.
