I thought it worked like this.

You can legally make a backup for yourself. But you can't make a copy of a CD and give it to someone. You can however lend them the CD, and they can make a copy of it for themself. Translate that into the internet, and you can download music off someone, but uploading it to someone is illegal.

Also, we pay for the music anyway, in any blank media you buy.

Question, What if you're uploading the music to someone in another country? does the same law still apply? and vise versa, if you're downloading from someone in another country, is it still legal?
