I am a pilot, was heading toward that as a career before other life issues got in the way.

You need (assuming you mean a fighter pilot)--

Good marks to get into University, preferably RMC
Good eyesight
Good health
Preferably under 6'0"
Fast reflexes
High G tolerances
A lot of luck, especially if you want to be in the Canadian Air Force. Planes are few and candidates are many.
