I say buy a TV that works for you for now, and invest the money in the Hi-Fi. That stuff will last you longer than the TV will if used properly, and a lot of stuff is future proof for a while too.
I agree that a lot of specialty stores are pricey, and a lot of big box store stuff is ricey, but there's always the other stores in between that sell a bit of both. I went with JVC TV and DVD (high models mind you), Marantz amplification, and Klipsch for the speakers. The Marantz and Klipsch stuff is a step above stuff you'll find at big shops, but it's priced realistically compared to a high-end snobby shop.
I once went to a shop that had a system wired with 3ft RCA cables that were $5000 each for some reason, and the seperate amps and preamps were about 15K each, and the speakers were worth as much as a New BMW...
I think you made the right choice in buying what suited your tastes and needs for now...you've got a wayyyy better tv than common consumers have anyways. Now just get yourself a nice set of HiFi kit.... :)
