If you're a floor above or below your antenna, you might want to tip it a bit so that it faces where you are. Also, concrete and steel will deflect or absorb some significant amount of signal, depending on the thickness of the object/wall. Wood / drywall will also absorb some, but not as much. The more walls between you and the antenna, the less signal to you. It's like listening to the radio at work... the guys with windows always get a better signal. Wireless networking is just two-way radio broadcasting.
