The worst part about living south of the 49th is that they believe that they really are judge, jury, and executioner when you set foot on their property.
The sad reality is that their constitution allows them to do just that. There is no clear-defined line between self-defence and self-moronicness. Obviously that's not a word, but I'm tired.
If he was breaking into your house, had visible accomplices breaking into your house, or otherwise offering an immediate affront to your personal safety and that of your family... by all means, defend away. I'm all for that.
When he's stealing your car - WHO CARES. IT'S A CAR. That's in caps because I can't stress that enough, and it has been said already more than once. Property can be replaced, people can't. So he's a criminal - you won't change that by shooting him and not killing him. All you're doing at that point is potentially delaying his return, perhaps with a massive chip on his shoulder.
The SRT could have been targeted for many reasons. We don't know the whole deal here. Perhaps buddy with the SRT straight-line dragged with him at an intersection the day before, beat him horribly and then flipped him the bird and gave other un-needed insults at that point. It's entirely possible. Perhaps he cut the guy off on the highway, or did something else and he was followed home? Maybe it was the chop-shop vehicle du jour?
I'm almost off on a tangent here, but what's clearly evident is that there's a flagrant disregard for life. Not just his or the thief's, but everyone's lives. He's actually showing less care and concern for his own family by just opening up on an attempted car thief than he is by picking up that miracle of science, the telephone, and then calling the cops.
